APT - Asia-Pacific Telecommunity

APT also organizes various capacity-building programs related to ICT topics and implements several pilot projects to promote ICT development in the region.

APT was established in 1979 from the joint initiatives of UN ESCAP and ITU as the intergovernmental organization focusing on telecommunication/ICT development and collaborations in the Asia-Pacific region Founded on the joint initiatives of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), APT is an intergovern

mental organization established in February 1979 to promote ICT development in the Asia-Pacific region. APT has 38 member administrations (“Members”), 4 administrations that are under the category of “Associate Members,” and 135 private companies and academic institutions (“Affiliate Members”) whose works are relevant to the ICT field. As the only intergovernmental organization focusing on the ICT field in the Asia-Pacific region, APT provides important ICT policy and regulatory coordination platforms and consolidates regional voices for international forums such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). APT provides sub-regional platforms to facilitate achieving sub-regional common interests. For example, the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators’ Council (SATRC), under the umbrella of APT, organizes working groups for policy and regulation and spectrum to facilitate harmonization among parties concerned.

ADF-23: The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity ( ), in collaboration with Thailand, will host the 23rd APT Telecommunication/ICT Development Forum ( ) on 14–15 July 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, with both in-person and remote participation.

The Forum will bring together policymakers, regulators, industry, and international organizations to discuss key ICT priorities, including digital connectivity, digital transformation, AI, data governance, digital safety, and ICT resilience. It will also showcase successful ICT projects supported through the APT Extra-Budgetary Contribution (EBC) Programme.

Dr. Masanori Kondo, Secretary General of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), had the honor to welcome H.E. Mr. Nassereddin Heidari, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, to the APT Headquarters on 10 June 2026.

The visit underscored the longstanding cordial relations and continued cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the APT.

📶 SATRC Working Group on Spectrum (WG SPEC): The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity ( ) recently held the SATRC Working Group on Spectrum (WG SPEC) meeting in Thimphu, Bhutan, hosted by Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (BICMA).

Bringing together 59 experts from across the region, the meeting kicked off key initiatives under the SATRC Action Plan Phase X (2026-2027).

Key Highlights:
🔹 Focus Areas: Unlicensed spectrum challenges, the impact of tech evolution on mobile broadband spectrum pricing, and regulatory approaches for V-band use.
🔹 Outcomes: Appointed Lead Experts, finalized country questionnaires, and adopted the official Work Plan.
🔹 The next face-to-face meeting of the WG SPEC is scheduled to be held in Q3, 2027, in Nepal.
