#IMAD2021 #togetheragainstmines #MineAwarenessDay
On this International Day for Mine Awareness, we are pleased to share APOPO’s progress in 🇰🇭 Cambodia. This Belgian non-profit organization detects and clears landmines with the help of trained rats 🐀 and dogs 🐶, bringing back hope and smiles to thousands of people.
"APOPO started working in Cambodia in 2016 and since then has cleared more than 9.5 million m2 of mine affected areas, destroying 2,000+ landmines, affecting the lives of 55,000+ men women and children.
Thanks to the support from 🇧🇪, APOPO has expanded its operations into the Province of Preah Vihear. With the world's highest number of mine casualties per capita Cambodia still has 817km2 of landmine contaminated areas and the National Plan is to declare Cambodia a mine-free country by 2025, something which will require quite a lot of collective efforts in the upcoming 5 years.
Millions of people in nearly 80 countries still live in fear of landmines and explosive remnants of war. On this day we call all nations to renew their commitment to the Mine Ban Treaty and unite for a Landmine Free World by 2025."
