หอศิลป์บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน ขอเชิญทุกท่านมาเปิดประสบการณ์กับนิทรรศการ "Urgency of Existence" นิทรรศการเดี่ยวครั้งแรกในเอเชียของ คาแดร์ อัทเทีย ศิลปินชาวฝรั่งเศส-แอลจีเรียที่มีชื่อเสียงระดับนานาชาติ ด้วยแนวคิดหลังอาณานิคม และการปลดปล่อยอาณานิคม จากสายตาของผู้ที่มีประสบการณ์ทางตรงและทางอ้อมของคนที่ถูกกดขี่ และถูกกระทำจากลัทธิล่าอาณานิคมในศตวรรษที่ผ่านมา จัดแสดงผลงานศิลปะผ่านสื่อที่หลากหลาย ตั้งแต่งานศิลปะจัดวางแบบให้คนมีประสบการณ์ร่วม งานประติมากรรม จิตรกรรม ไปจนถึงภาพยนตร์ที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นใหม่ ที่หอศิลป์บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน ตั้งแต่วันที่ 23 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2567 ถึงวันที่ 16 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2568 ผ่านการคัดสรรโดย กฤติยา กาวีวงศ์ ผู้อำนวยการหอศิลป์บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน และอดีตผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายศิลป์ มหกรรมศิลปะนานาชาติ ไทยแลนด์ เบียนนาเล่ เชียงราย พ.ศ. 2566 ที่ผ่านมา

"Urgency of Existence" มุ่งเจาะลึกในแนวคิดของอัทเทียเกี่ยวกับการซ่อมแซม (repair) เพื่อสำรวจความเร่งด่วนในการปลดแอกอาณานิคมทั่วโลก (decolonization) กับอาณานิคมแอบแฝง (crypto colonization) ในประเทศไทยและภูมิภาคโดยรอบ พร้อมทั้งกระตุ้นให้เห็นข้อจำกัดของเวลา และทำความเข้าใจความซับซ้อนของยุคสมัยแห่งความไม่แน่นอน คาแดร์ อัทเทียต่อยอดการค้นคว้ามาจากผลงานที่จัดแสดง ณ ไทยแลนด์ เบียนนาเล่ เชียงราย พ.ศ. 2566 ผนวกแนวคิดเรื่องการรวมตัว (gathering) และการแยกส่วน (separation) ทั้งในความหมายตรงตัวและการอุปมาอุปไมย ศิลปินสื่อสารถึงความเจ็บปวดและบาดแผลทางวัฒนธรรมที่ยังไม่ถูกลืมเลือนราวกับเป็นเงา หรือ "ผี" ของความทรงจำทางจิตวิญญาณ ที่คอยหวนกลับมาหลอกหลอนในชีวิตประจำวัน ซึ่งไม่เพียงแต่ชี้ให้เห็นกระบวนการสำคัญของการดำรงอยู่ของมนุษย์และจิตวิเคราะห์ ยังสะท้อนถึงผลกระทบทางประวัติศาสตร์ ความซับซ้อนทางวัฒนธรรม การเมือง ประสบการณ์จากยุคล่าอาณานิคมอีกด้วย

The Jim Thompson Art Center invites you to experience "Urgency of Existence," the first solo exhibition in Asia by internationally acclaimed French-Algerian artist Kader Attia. This exhibition explores the themes of postcolonialism and decolonization, offering insights into the historical, cultural, and psychological impacts of colonialism from the perspective of those directly oppressed and affected by its repercussions over the past century.
The exhibition features a diverse range of media, including immersive installations, sculptures, paintings, and a newly commissioned film. It will be on view at the Jim Thompson Art Center from November 23, 2024, to March 16, 2025. Curated by Gridthiya Gaweewong, Artistic Director of the Jim Thompson Art Center and artistic director of the recent Thailand Biennale Chiang Rai 2023, the exhibition highlights Attia’s exploration of the concept of repair, addressing historical and contemporary issues of separation and gathering and their connection to decolonial narratives.

"Urgency of Existence" examines Attia’s concept of repair, investigating the urgency of global decolonization and crypto-colonization in Thailand and the surrounding region. The exhibition encourages critical reflection on the limitations of time and fosters a deeper understanding of the complexities of today’s uncertain era.
Building on his research and work presented at the Thailand Biennale Chiang Rai 2023, Attia incorporates the themes of gathering and separation, both in their literal and metaphorical senses. The artist communicates lingering pain and unresolved cultural wounds, likening them to shadows or "ghosts" of spiritual memory that continue to haunt everyday life.
This exhibition not only underscores the vital processes underpinning human existence and psychoanalytic thought but also sheds light on the historical impacts, cultural intricacies, political dynamics, and lived experiences shaped by colonialism.

This exhibition is supported by the James H.W. Thompson Foundation, Galleries’ Nights, the French Embassy in Thailand, Studio Kader Attia, Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains, and Disaphol Chansiri - DC Collection.

'Fragmented Reality: Selected Works from DC Collection'

The Jim Thompson Art Center is pleased to present “Fragmented Reality”, an exhibition of contemporary art from the DC Collection, founded by Dr. Disaphol Chansiri, a renowned collector of contemporary art from both Thailand and beyond. He is a member of the board of trustees at the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. Dr. Disaphol resides in Bangkok, Thailand, and he is the dean of the School of Digital Arts and Design, University of Thai Chamber of Commerce.


Amidst the digital disruption and the rise of Artificial Intelligence, our perception of reality can be fragmented, giving rise to alternative perspectives. Fragmented Reality focuses on different aspects of reality, which exist in separate parts or as separate views. How can we perceive reality in the era of digital disruption? Art offers a great example of how to ponder and understand today's complex realities. This was the departure point for the Jim Thompson Art Center team to curate this exhibition of selected outstanding artworks from the DC Collection. The show encompasses a wide range of works that embody the complexity of social history, cultural ecology and environmental issues of our times.

The exhibition showcases local and international artists, ranging from drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography, and installations. Their works embody fragmented human experiences in relationship to nature and technology. The exhibition also addresses and comments on the impact of transformative historical, social, political, economic, and cultural phenomena over the centuries. The selected works invoke the spirit of the past and indigenous wisdom transmission, while at the same time considering ecological issues.

Participating artists: Olafur Eliasson (Denmark), Theaster Gates (USA), Andreas Gursky (Germany), Osang Gwon (South Korea), Damien Hirst (UK), Zai Kuning (Singapore), Yayoi Kusama (Japan), Jompet Kuswidananto (Indonesia), Kohei Nawa (Japan), Nalini Malani (India), Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook (Thailand), Thomas Struth (Germany), Kara Walker (USA) and Zhang Xiaogang (China).

Fragmented Reality ให้ความสำคัญกับการรับรู้ความเป็นจริงที่กลายเป็นเศษเสี้ยวนำมาประกอบกันในนิทรรศการ ทำให้เกิดมุมมอง หรือพิจารณาแบบทางเลือก แนวคิดนี้อาจมุ่งเน้นไปที่รายละเอียดที่แตกต่างกันของความเป็นจริง ในสภาวะแบบนี้เราจะรับรู้ความเป็นจริงในยุคแห่งการแทรกแซงทางเทคโนโลยีได้อย่างไร? งานศิลปะถือเป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีอย่างหนึ่ง ที่ช่วยให้เราไตร่ตรองและเข้าใจ ความเป็นจริงที่ซับซ้อนในปัจจุบัน การพยายามทำความเข้าใจ ความจริงแบบเศษเสี้ยวผ่าน งานศิลปะ เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นและแรงบันดาลใจในการจัดนิทรรศการครั้งนี้ โดยคัดสรรผลงานส่วนหนึ่งจากคลังสะสม DC Collectionเช่น ผลงานวาดเส้น จิตรกรรม ประติมากรรม ภาพถ่าย และศิลปะจัดวาง อันเป็นเหมือนการแบ่งปันเรื่องราวและประสบการณ์ของศิลปินที่เกิดจากผลกระทบของปรากฎการณ์ที่เปลี่ยนผ่าน ทางประวัติศาสตร์ สังคม การเมือง เศรษฐกิจ และวัฒนธรรมในช่วงหลายศตวรรษที่ผ่านมา ผลงานเหล่านี้บอกเล่าเรื่องราวสะท้อนเศษเสี้ยวความจริง ที่แยกส่วนของประสบการณ์มนุษย์กับธรรมชาติและเทคโนโลยี มากไปกว่านั้นยังได้บอกเล่าเรื่องเล่าจากอดีต การส่งต่อองค์ความรู้แบบพื้นบ้าน และคำนึงถึงประเด็นของระบบนิเวศอีกด้วย
