Fun Fact: 20 years ago, I met this friend of mine, Dr. Aree. I had taken our youngest, Aree, to the eye doctor, Dr. Shompoo, and found out Dr. Shompoo was my neighbor! As we were talking, I told her about my newly opened orphanage with just 5 boys. She said I should meet her pediatrician friend, Dr. Aree, who was looking for a place to volunteer! As we walked down the hall together, Dr. Aree just HAPPENED to be walking right towards us! It was providential! We met and Dr. Aree shared how she would drive all the way to Bangkok to volunteer at an orphanage there, but it really was too far, so I quickly invited her to volunteer with us! Later I asked her to be on our board, which she served on for over ten years! She also has allowed all of our children to be treated for FREE with FREE medication for all of these years at her personal clinic...and it STILL continues today! There really are not enough words to express my gratitude to God and to Dr. Aree SaengsiriwutSaengsiriwut for setting us up to be friends and partners for the sake of our children!

Fun Fact: I'm grateful that during the early days of ALH and the years of the feasibility study before ALH opened our doors, we had team 2000 around us who were like uncles, aunts and cousins/siblings to our first children. Every Friday we would rotate having the first 5 boys over to a home for a sleepover to give P Ganiga a break. They all pitched in to make birthdays special and helped disciple and love our children! The picture of Carmen and I nursing our babies, reminds me of just how much we were all juggling during those early years...language study, cultural study, home schooling, driving, feeding our kids who didn't like spicy food, church planting, hosting teams and having babies ourselves. God took our humble offerings and built a beautiful family and community for hundreds of children and women in crises over the last years...thank you friends and thank you Jesus!

Fun Fact: This is Avis Rideout, my friend and mentor. She started the Agape Home in Thailand, and was the one I called when I needed a home for the first baby I met in Chonburi Hospital years ago. She opened her heart and home to the baby, and they nursed her back to health. I am eternally grateful to Avis for then turning into my unofficial mentor in the years that followed as I started the Abundant Life Home. She was often my first call for advice, venting and praying together. Avis would always ask me, "Karen, do you have faith? Then He'll give you the answers you are looking for about policy, standards of care and everything in between." I was looking for some black and white answers...but now I recognize that her encouragement to me to have faith, was a much deeper principal that went on to inform our discernment process and helped us stay open to the Holy Spirit for each new case and situation that we were invited into. Thank you Avis! I am eternally grateful to you for being there for me over all these 20+ years!

Fun Fact: Our friend and local pastor, Pastor Boo, helped us immensely in our first years. He was the one I called for help to get Jinthanna out of the hospital. He helped me with the local social worker, with finding a relative to sign papers, and with getting Jinthanna up to an orphanage in Chiang Mai. Then he helped me find our first boys an elementary school to attend, because he coached soccer for the school for free. Later I hired him and he took our first 5 boys and taught them keyboard, drums, bass, guitar and electric guitar and formed them into a little boy band. Thank you Boo Chon Chukiat of Power Church!

Fun Fact: Mr. Kim, a friend of ALH and a chaplain for the USA Marines, brought over 90 US Marines to help us build our homes about 16 years ago. They came in on ships to the nearby port, and he brought them to us by the bus-loads. They carried bricks and cement and did hard labor for our building project for a few hours. Then we had them lead a fun 'boot camp' of exercises for our teenagers...everyone laughing and trying to keep up with the pace of the marines! Then we shared some testimonies and a devotional time and prayed over the marines. After a delicious BBQ chicken dinner together, we bid them farewell and felt enormous gratitude for their help, their honesty about how hard it was to be away from their familes doing the job they were doing, and the chance to pray over them and minister to many of them, as they headed off to their next assignment.

Meet our friend Steve Klassen. He is a friend and supporter of ALH. He plays his trumpet for our worship times and blessed us by playing the King's Anthem for our 20th Anniversary Fiesta. In a few months he is coming back to teach at our DTS. Thanks Steve for serving Global Sports as Chaplain and as our Women's Coach, and at ALH in so many ways.

Fun Fact: Once we were ready to build, Jack Wiley from the mid west (Kansas), came to help us as project manager and help us oversee the construction. Jack came for a couple of months, left his wife back home, and jumped right in to helping us get good quality workmanship from our builders. Jack was easy going, fun to be around and loved our children and community. We appreciated his help and gentle spirit so much!
