What does it take to age well as a nation? ACAI's recent study visit funded by IDRC in Asia to Singapore points to three answers: shift care from hospitals to communities, plan cities for ageing decades ahead, and get government, researchers, and communities moving together.

These lessons are shaping the Regional Action Plan on Active Ageing, part of ACAI's ongoing work with ASEAN Member States to build a region-wide picture of active ageing.

Thank you to everyone who hosted and shared their expertise during the visit.

We have just concluded an important study visit to Viet Nam under Phase 2 of the project "Advancing Active Ageing in ASEAN: Strategy Mapping and Regional Monitoring through the ASEAN Active Ageing Index (AAAI)", supported by IDRC in Asia.

Key observations from our recent engagement:
✅ Vietnam's Vice Minister of Health, Do Xuan Tuyen, outlined five strategic priorities for ASEAN during Vietnam's Chairmanship (2026–2028), with the development of the Silver Economy emerging as a shared regional priority.
✅ Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs (ISHCs) continue to demonstrate the value of community-led integrated care by combining peer health support, social participation, and income-generating activities.
✅ Strong collaboration among governments, civil society organizations, and development partners is creating new opportunities to scale innovative approaches for healthy and active ageing.
✅ Stakeholders also expressed interest in the ASEAN Active Ageing Index (AAAI) as a regional monitoring tool to track progress and inform evidence-based policymaking.

At the same time, several areas require continued attention:
• Strengthening referral pathways between community-based screening and formal health services.
• Expanding digital literacy alongside digital access so older persons can safely participate in the digital economy and society.
• Adapting community care models to changing family structures as more households transition from multi-generational to nuclear families.

Looking ahead, ASEAN has a strong foundation to build on. Existing policy frameworks, proven community models such as ISHCs, and growing regional partnerships provide an opportunity to:
• Scale community-led active ageing initiatives across the region.
• Strengthen coordination across the health, social, labour, and finance sectors.
• Develop sustainable financing mechanisms that leverage public investment, development partner support, and private sector engagement to advance the Silver Economy.

Together, these efforts can help create a more inclusive, resilient, and age-friendly ASEAN where older persons continue to contribute to their families, communities, and economies.

Following the MOU signing, ACAI was pleased to host a follow-up meeting between อบจ.ระยอง (Rayong Provincial Administrative Organization), เทศบาลเมืองมาบตาพุด (Map Ta Phut Municipality), and Fukuoka City to explore concrete collaboration on advancing the care economy.

Discussions focused on the "One Village, One Caregiver" concept, caregiver training and upskilling, study abroad opportunities for Thai students in Japan, and strengthening integrated community-based care. Both sides also exchanged ideas on community-based care and cultural exchange initiatives.

ACAI looks forward to supporting this partnership as it translates shared ideas into meaningful action.

We're encouraged by the strength of this year's response, including single-country projects and multi-country collaborations, with digital inclusion and social connectedness as the most frequent primary themes.
