Si-Nuan: Our 56-Year-Old Grandmother Elephant 🐘🤍
Si-Nuan has been a part of the Lily Elephant Camp family since the very beginning, three years ago. Her journey to us wasn't easy. After a lifetime of heavy logging work, her aging body and failing eyesight—caused by a tragic accident—made her "useless" in the eyes of her previous owners. She was put up for sale cheaply, but fate stepped in when a kind soul rescued her and brought her to us.
Looking at her was the moment we decided: "We have to do this." We had to build a camp for souls like hers.
Si-Nuan is now almost completely blind. One eye was lost years ago to a hook injury, and the other has succumbed to cataracts from years of harsh sunlight and debris. The world is becoming a dark place for her, and it terrifies her. The sound of an engine—a car starting or a bike passing—is enough to make her flinch and turn her head in fear, haunted by memories of past pain.
This is why we moved our camp to a more secluded, quiet forest—just so she could find peace.
Lately, her world has dimmed even further. Over the last few days, she can no longer recognize faces. She relies entirely on her sense of smell and the sound of our voices. People often ask us why we have to guide elephants so closely. For Si-Nuan, her mahout (caretaker) is her only bridge to the world. Without him, she would be confined to a small cage for her own safety. But with him, she can still walk through the forest, feel the grass under her feet, and find her favorite fruits safely.
Her fear of engine noises has grown as her sight has faded. Now, even the familiar sound of the tricycle bringing her food scares her. So, we adapt. We speak louder. We touch her more gently. We talk to her constantly so she knows she is never, ever alone.
Our Promise to Si-Nuan: We may not be able to bring back your sight, but we will be your eyes. We will never abandon you. We will slow down this darkness with as much love and care as humanly possible.
To our visitors: If you meet Grandma Si-Nuan, please speak to her clearly. Touch her gently. Let her feel that there are kind hearts right here beside her. She may live in a world that is going dark, but she will never live in a world without love.
Please send some love and encouragement to our Grandma Si-Nuan. ✨🙏
