Peace Corps Timor-Leste and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI) celebrated a major milestone on April 22, 2026, with the signing of their first formal MoU, strengthening a partnership that has grown since 2015. The agreement deepens collaboration to support Timor-Leste’s economic development by placing Peace Corps Volunteers within MCI programs at both national and municipal levels. With Volunteers already contributing to MSME capacity-building, data improvements, strategic planning, and digital tools, this partnership embodies a shared commitment to empowering institutions and communities across the country. Peace Corps Timor-Leste and Ministry of Education Sign Extension Agreement to Support English Teaching and Schools

On April 7, 2026, Peace Corps Timor-Leste and the Ministry of Education formalized their continued partnership through the signing of the extension of a memorandum of understanding.

This collaboration focuses on strengthening English language instruction and supporting effective classroom and school management. Peace Corps Volunteers work alongside Timorese English teachers in schools across the country, sharing teaching practices, supporting student learning, and contributing to a positive classroom environment.

Currently, nineteen Peace Corps Volunteers in country and seven Education Volunteers are based in schools, co-teaching and supporting English instruction. One third-year Volunteer and a former Peace Corps Timor-Leste Volunteer are working with national counterparts to support curriculum development for the third cycle.

We are grateful to the Ministry of Education for its strong partnership and shared commitment to improving education. Together, we are working to support Timorese English teachers, strengthen the English curricula, and expand opportunities for students across Timor-Leste.

March 1 is celebrated as Peace Corps Day. It is a special occasion to honor President John F. Kennedy’s vision when he launched the Peace Corps in 1961, encouraging Volunteers to promote peace and friendship around the world. Since then, more than 240,000 Americans have served in 144 countries. Here in Timor-Leste, we have welcomed over 200 Volunteers since our first cohort in 2002. Happy Peace Corps Week, everyone!

Last weekend, mana Annabelle and her counterpart, mestre Ivónio, organized an excursion for 50 students from their school to visit a local turtle conservation initiative run by the youth volunteer organization “Lenuk Tasi.” Their host, maun Cedelizio, delivered a short presentation about sea turtles, the different species found in Timor-Leste and the important role each person can play in protecting these marine animals. After the talk, the Volunteers, educators, and students all worked together to clean up the beach.

It was inspiring to see such strong collaboration and enthusiasm from everyone involved. Our PCVs and counterparts are leading by example, sharing knowledge, and raising awareness about the importance of protecting our marine ecosystem and local turtle populations. Parabéns todos for a job well done.

Last year, Peace Corps Timor-Leste had the honor of welcoming Dr. John Lee Evans, Board Chair of the National Peace Corps Association to our office. During his visit to Timor-Leste, Dr. Evans met with our staff and several Volunteers serving in their communities, gaining a firsthand look at the impact of their work and their everyday experience living with their host family.

Today, we are excited to share a short video interview in which Dr. Evans reflects on his impressions of Timor-Leste and the meaningful experiences Volunteers gain while living and working alongside their communities. He also witnessed how deeply Volunteers become part of their host families, many affectionately calling their host parents amá and apá, a wonderful sign of the cultural immersion and strong bonds formed during service.

This President’s Day, we honor leaders who shaped our nation and the ideals that inspire service. From George Washington’s integrity to Abraham Lincoln’s courage to John F. Kennedy’s call to action, their legacies remind us that leadership is rooted in service.

Kennedy’s vision launched the Peace Corps in 1961, empowering Volunteers to promote peace and friendship worldwide. Today, more than 240,000 Americans have served in 144 countries, including 200+ in Timor-Leste since 2002.

Service is a powerful force for peace and that call continues.
