Santa Marija is Malta’s most significant summer religious feast and is also a national public holiday in Malta. Celebrated annually on August 15, this event refers to the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and holds a special place in the hearts of the Maltese people. Seven towns and villages on this day celebrate the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s ascent into heaven, through street decorations, fireworks displays, and religious processions.
On the same day, the Virgin Mary of Trapani is also celebrated in La Goulette (Tunisia). This event has been celebrated since 1885 and remains an example of peaceful coexistence between different religious communities.
