Santa Marija is Malta’s most significant summer religious feast and is also a national public holiday in Malta. Celebrated annually on August 15, this event refers to the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and holds a special place in the hearts of the Maltese people. Seven towns and villages on this day celebrate the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s ascent into heaven, through street decorations, fireworks displays, and religious processions.

On the same day, the Virgin Mary of Trapani is also celebrated in La Goulette (Tunisia). This event has been celebrated since 1885 and remains an example of peaceful coexistence between different religious communities.

The working holiday for Youths of Maltese descent scheme was officially launched last October and came into effect on 1st January 2026.

The scheme targets youths aged 18–30 of Maltese descent and aims to facilitate their travel to Malta to work, study, and explore their roots. Applicants are eligible to apply for a National D Visa, issued by Identità, which will be valid for one year. It is intended to strengthen links between Malta and its diaspora by providing a practical route for young people of Maltese descent to reconnect with their ancestral homeland. After the one-year period, if applicants wish to continue residing in Malta, they will be able to apply for a Residence Permit. The scheme also serves as an incentive for these individuals to eventually apply for Maltese citizenship.

L-Imnarja (the Festival of Light) is one of Malta's oldest and most deeply rooted summer folk festivals. Held annually on June 28th and 29th at Buskett, Rabat, this event celebrates the feast of St. Peter and St. Paul with traditional folk music (l-għana), agricultural exhibitions, livestock displays, and massive rural feasts.

The traditional dish of L-Imnarja is stewed rabbit (fenkata) whereby a whole rabbit is typically marinated in wine, then stewed with aromatic herbs and vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, onions, and garlic until tender.
