• To ensure accurate, timely and accessible weather forecasts and warnings, weather observations, climate data and pr

edictions, and maritime information is communicated to and understood by stakeholders;
• To provide a coordinated system that facilitates quality, modern and secured energy services to achieve 50% for renewable energy for Tonga in 2020;
• Plan, implement, deliver and manage quality IT services with standards and policies to safeguard and satisfy the requirements of the government, national ICT community, and services;
• Ensure there is an appropriate system of rules, regulations and planning to effectively implement and inform disaster management strategies for all sectors and communities;
• To put in place an effective system to facilitate the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of the natural environment, while maintaining ecosystems services;
• To put in place an effective system to facilitate climate change mitigation and adaption and phasing out of ozone-depleting substances;
• To ensure there is a modern and technological communication infrastructure to assist with the restructuring of the Kingdom’s service delivery;
• To coordinate and collaborate amongst stakeholders to prevent through public awareness, detect and manage cyber threats in the Kingdom of Tonga; and
• To provide an effective and accurate provision of budgetary figures, leave entitlements and incremental dates, timely provision of financial reports, and legal advice plus adhere to relevant procurement and PSC policies.

The Delegation from Tonga 🇹🇴 arrived in The People’s Republic of China Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th to attend the Seminar on Planning and Development of Artificial Intelligence industry for Tonga July 27th until August 09th in Shenzhen China 🇨🇳. The organizer for this 14 days Seminar is the Association for Promoting Foreign Economic and Technological Cooperation (APIETC). The majority of the delegation from are government officials from the Ministry of MEIDECCC also included few government officials from Public Service Commission office, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Education. The CEO of the Ministry Mr. Sione Akauola had a Bilateral meeting with the Deputy Secretary General of ITU Mr. Tomas Lamanauskas in Port Moresby Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬 to discuss ICT issues during their presence to attend the ICT Ministerial meeting at APEC Haus Thursday 23rd July 2026. International Tsunami Experts Visit Tonga to Advance UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Programme.

The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO), in partnership with the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC) and the International Tsunami Information Centre (ITIC), successfully hosted a Tsunami Ready Stakeholder Workshop in Nuku'alofa from 15–16 July 2026 as part of an international technical mission to support Tonga's journey towards becoming a UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready nation.

The country visit brought together leading international tsunami experts, including Dr. Laura Kong, Director of the International Tsunami Information Centre (ITIC), UNESCO/IOC and NOAA Joint Partnership; David Coetzee, Tsunami Response and Preparedness Expert, ITIC; and Jiuta Korovulavula, National Professional Officer for Disaster Risk Reduction and Tsunami Warning, UNESCO Office for the Pacific States.

Beyond the stakeholder workshop, the mission included a series of technical meetings with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO), Tonga Meteorological Services (TMS), and the Tonga Geological Services (TGS) of the Ministry of Lands. These pre- and post-workshop consultations provided an opportunity to review Tonga's existing tsunami warning arrangements, discuss progress in tsunami hazard assessment, monitoring and early warning systems, preparedness planning, and community resilience, while identifying priorities for continued collaboration under the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme.

These engagements reaffirmed the strong partnership between Tonga's national agencies and international technical experts in building an integrated, end-to-end tsunami early warning and preparedness system that will better protect lives, livelihoods, and communities across the Kingdom.

The two-day stakeholder workshop brought together representatives from government ministries, technical agencies, non-government organisations (NGOs), academia, and development partners to strengthen national coordination and preparedness for tsunami hazards.

Participants were introduced to the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme, an internationally recognised framework that supports at-risk coastal communities in improving tsunami preparedness through enhanced governance, hazard assessment, early warning, evacuation planning, public awareness, education, and community engagement. Through technical presentations, interactive discussions, and group exercises, participants explored international best practices while identifying practical actions to strengthen Tonga's national and community-level tsunami preparedness.

As one of the world's most tsunami-exposed nations, Tonga remains committed to ensuring that its communities have the knowledge, systems, and capacity to respond quickly and effectively when tsunami threats occur. The workshop represents an important milestone towards the rollout of the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Programme in Tonga, where selected pilot communities will work towards achieving international Tsunami Ready recognition.

The initiative also contributes to the global ambition of ensuring that all at-risk communities are Tsunami Ready by 2030, strengthening resilience through improved preparedness, effective warning systems, and coordinated community action.

The National Disaster Risk Management Office extends its sincere appreciation to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC), the International Tsunami Information Centre (ITIC), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Department of State Bureau of Disaster and Humanitarian Response, and all national and international partners for their continued technical and financial support.

The NDRMO also acknowledges the valuable participation and commitment of all government ministries, Tonga Meteorological Services, Tonga Geological Services, non-government organisations, technical agencies, academia, development partners, and stakeholders whose collaboration continues to strengthen Tonga's national tsunami preparedness and resilience.

Together, through partnership, science, and community action, we are building a safer, stronger, and more tsunami-ready Tonga.

CERT Tonga seeks a creative and communication-focused intern to join our Security Awareness and Training team. This role is perfect for someone who is passionate about education and wants to help bridge the gap between complex cybersecurity concepts and the everyday user.

This position aligns with the NICE Framework role of Cyber Instructional Curriculum Developer (OV-CGT), focusing on the clarity, organisation, and delivery of security-related content.

Role Overview
As a Security Awareness intern, your mission is to help us build a "security-first" culture. You won't be writing code; instead, you will be refining the messages we send to our employees to ensure they stay safe online. You will help review training materials, organise engagement events, and analyse feedback to make our security education more effective and user-friendly.

Key Responsibilities:
● Communication Refinement: Proofread and edit security alerts, newsletters, and posters to ensure they are professional and easy to understand.
● Instructional Support: Act as a "test audience" for new training modules, identifying language that might be too technical for non-security staff.
● Visual Storytelling: Support the creation of engaging presentations and awareness materials by sourcing icons, stock images, and layouts.
● Training Logistics: Assist in the physical or digital organisation of training sessions, ensuring all materials are ready and the environment is set for success.
● Feedback Analysis: Collect and organise data from user surveys to help the team understand which training topics are sticking and which need more work.

Technical Focus & Skills
● NICE Alignment: Focused on OV-CGT (developing and managing cybersecurity education and training).

Qualifications
● Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Security and Information Technology from a recognized educational institution.
● A "people-person" who enjoys making technology less intimidating for others.
● Strong writing and editing skills with a sharp eye for detail.
● Creative mindset with an interest in how people learns and process information.

CERT Tonga seeks a methodical and organised intern to join our team with a focus on Cyber Hygiene and Governance. In this role, you will move beyond the "technical noise" to ensure the foundational structures of our security program—policies, inventories, and compliance—are airtight.

This position aligns with the NICE Framework roles of Systems Administration (OM-ADM) and Vulnerability Analyst (PR-VAM), focusing on the administrative and preventative side of a Security Operations Centre.

Role Overview
As a Cyber Hygiene intern, your mission is to ensure that our security "paperwork" matches our security "reality." You will support the SOC by maintaining accurate documentation, verifying that our systems follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and preparing the team for internal and external audits.

Key Responsibilities
● Inventory & Asset Management: Maintain and update hardware and software inventories to ensure only authorised devices are on the network.
● Audit Preparation: Assist in "Evidence Gathering" by collecting screenshots, logs, and configurations that prove our security controls are active.
● Policy Optimisation: Review existing security policies for accuracy, ensuring they reflect the current tools and organisational structure.
● Compliance Mapping: Learn to bridge the gap between technical tasks and regulatory requirements (e.g., NIST, CIS, or ISO frameworks).
● Stakeholder Engagement: Coordinate with different departments to verify that security hygiene practices (like password updates or clean desk policies) are being followed.

Technical Focus & Skills
● NICE Alignment: Focused on OM-ADM (maintaining system integrity) and PR-VAM (identifying gaps in hygiene).
● Framework Exposure: You will work directly with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) to understand how policy drives technical defence.

This morning Monday, June 22nd, 2026 - CERT Tonga and Cambridge Global Advisors in partnership with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through the Southeast Asia Pacific Cyber Program (SEA-PAC Cyber), conducted a half-day virtual executive training to women on various areas with regards to Cybersecurity.

Participants were from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Tonga Fire & Emergency Services, Wantok, TCC, Digicel Tonga and National Reserve Bank of Tonga.

The Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Communications, Climate Change and CERT (MEIDECC) today recognised the distinguished service of Mrs. ‘Ana Fakafe’ao-he-Vava Fifita, in an acknowledgement led by the Honourable Prime Minister and Minister for MEIDECC, Lord Fakafanua, as she prepares to retire on Friday, 17 April 2026.
Mrs. Fifita is among the pioneering officers of MEIDECC, having been part of the initial group of staff transferred from the Prime Minister’s Office in 2009 to establish the Ministry of Information & Communication. Her contributions during its formative years were instrumental in strengthening its corporate systems and administrative foundations. She began her service as a junior officer under Corporate Services and was promoted in 2016 to a senior role within the Accounts Division, where she played a key role in supporting financial operations. Her career reflects professionalism, discipline, and commitment to public service. Throughout her tenure, Mrs. Fifita was recognised as “Staff of the Year” on numerous occasions, reflecting her consistent performance and integrity. She is widely respected across the Ministry for her reliability, strong organisational capability, and her support to colleagues.
In acknowledging her service, the Honourable Prime Minister commended Mrs. Fifita longstanding contribution to Government, noting that her work has helped shape the institutional foundation and operational effectiveness of MEIDECC. Her career stands as a testament to the values of dedication, integrity, and service to the people of Tonga.
As she concludes her service, MEIDECC recognises Mrs. Fifita as a valued public servant whose legacy will continue to contribute to the Ministry’s ongoing work. The Ministry extends its sincere appreciation and best wishes to her as she enters retirement.
