Thank you Australia in Tonga for always supporting our nurses. Your support has been crucial in improving, innovating and driving forward our services.

Happy International Nurses Day!

Today we celebrate the compassion, leadership and dedication of nurses who care for our communities every day. We recognise their vital role in building strong and resilient health systems around the world.

Meet Kasanita Fifita Ahokava, Nurse Unit Manager of the Mental Health Unit at Vaiola Hospital. Kasanita began her nursing journey in 2002, inspired by the care and commitment she witnessed from nurses during a difficult time in her family’s life.

For Kasanita, nursing is deeply human.

“Being a nurse means combining compassion, advocacy and professional expertise to care for patients in their most vulnerable moments. Nursing is not just a career - it is a commitment to treating every person as a whole human being.”

On International Nurses Day, we extend our gratitude to Kasanita and all nurses in Tonga and across the world whose dedication, empathy and commitment make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

Today, we honour the strength, compassion, and dedication of nurses across Tonga on International Nurses Day.

Nursing is more than a profession — it is a calling of service, sacrifice, and humanity. Through every long shift, every emergency, every comforting word, and every life touched, nurses continue to stand as the backbone of our health system and the heart of patient care.

In moments of uncertainty and in moments of healing, nurses are there — caring, advocating, and giving hope to individuals, families, and communities throughout Tonga.

To all our nurses serving in hospitals, health centres, communities, and outer islands, mālō ‘aupito for your unwavering commitment and compassion. Your work inspires us all.

“Not all heroes wear capes — some wear scrubs and carry the strength to care for others every day.”

Happy International Nurses Day.

Hon. Minister, Huákavameiliku briefed on JICA Tonga Office ResPACT Project to Strengthen Health System Resilience

Nuku’alofa, Tonga, 7th May 2026

The Hon. Minister for Health was briefed on Thursday 7th May, on the progress and strategic direction of the ResPACT Project (Pacific Co-Learning Towards Resilient Health Systems) during a meeting held at 1:00 PM at the Ministry of Health.

The briefing was attended by the Ministry’s Chief Executive Officer and members of the Executive Team, who were present to support the Hon. Minister in discussions with the Project Team. The session was led by the ResPACT Project Team Leader, Ms. Makiko Konohara, and supported by the Technical Officer.
Ms. Konohara explained that the ResPACT Project is a five-year regional initiative (2023–2028), supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aimed at strengthening the resilience of health systems across Pacific Island countries. The project focuses on promoting shared learning, enhancing workforce capacity, and implementing practical interventions to improve public health outcomes. In addition, the ResPACT Project was highlighted as aligning with the 2023 Heads of Health definition of a resilient health system, the ability to maintain essential health services while effectively responding to future shocks.

During the briefing, key updates were presented on ongoing activities and priorities under the project, including efforts to address gaps identified during the COVID19 pandemic. These include the development of Operational Strategies for Maintaining Essential NCD Services During Health Emergencies and the SOP for NCD Services During Health Emergencies, strengthening health workforce capacity through distance learning, improving health information and data systems, and reinforcing referral systems, particularly in the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The Hon. Minister acknowledged the importance of the ResPACT Project in supporting Tonga’s health sector priorities and expressed appreciation for the continued collaboration between the Ministry of Health, JICA, and project partners.

The Ministry remains committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the project and to build a more resilient and responsive health system for the people of Tonga.

Dr Joseph Takai, who leads health emergency response actions in Tonga with the Ministry of Health Tonga, shares his experience as WHO’s first “leader” in the Health Emergency Corps Fellowship Programme.

“The WHO Fellowship offers health leaders across the Western Pacific an opportunity to lash our canoes together, to learn from and lean on each other.”

Inspired by the Tongan proverb, “Pikipiki hama ka tau vaevae manava” — a reminder of unity and mutual support during challenging times.
