Q: Could you tell us briefly about your background?

I am Alperen Uğurlu, a cybersecurity entrepreneur and the Co-Founder and CEO of SelfHack AI. I have worked in cybersecurity for nearly ten years, mainly in pe*******on testing, offensive security, product security, and security research. By identifying and responsibly reporting vulnerabilities, I earned recognition in the Hall of Fame programmes of Apple, Tesla, and Google. Today, I focus on autonomous AI technologies that make advanced pe*******on testing more scalable and accessible.

Q: How did your connection with Finland begin?

My connection with Finland began through the Finnish Startup Permit programme. After building my cybersecurity career and developing a scalable business idea, I applied and moved to Finland to establish SelfHack AI in Helsinki. I believe this initiative is valuable because it helps Finland attract qualified entrepreneurs, expertise, and innovative companies. It gives experienced founders with strong ideas a clear path to build their businesses in Finland, supporting innovation, qualified immigration, and economic growth.

Q: How did building your business in Finland shape your path to European cybersecurity success?

Building SelfHack in Finland gave us both a strong technology ecosystem and an important foundation of trust. Finland is internationally associated with transparency, reliable institutions, data protection, and high technological standards. Companies operating here are expected to meet clear legal, administrative, and financial requirements. As a result, being established and successfully operating in Finland creates a positive perception among international customers, partners, and investors. In cybersecurity, where trust is essential, this has been especially valuable. Soru: Kendinizi ve akademik geçmişinizi kısaca tanıtabilir misiniz?
2018 yılından bu yana Turku Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi Öğretmen Eğitimi Bölümü’nde öğretim üyesi olarak görev yapıyorum. Daha önce Ankara’daki Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi’nde yaklaşık 20 yıl çalıştım. Araştırma alanlarım matematik eğitimi, öğretmen eğitimi ve araştırmacı eğitiminin kesişim noktalarında yer alıyor.

Soru: Her iki ülkedeki akademik deneyiminiz araştırmacı olarak kariyerinizi nasıl şekillendirdi? Finlandiya ile Türkiye arasındaki hangi farklılıklar özellikle dikkatinizi çekti?
Hem Türkiye’de hem de Finlandiya’da öğretmen eğitimcisi ve öğretim üyesi olarak görev yapmak kariyerim açısından son derece verimli ve geliştirici bir deneyim oldu. Finlandiya’nın kültürüne, eğitim sistemine, öğretmen yetiştirme sistemine, yükseköğretim sistemine ve üniversite kültürüne uyum sağlamak, farklı bakış açıları geliştirmemi teşvik etti. Bununla birlikte, Finlandiya’daki araştırma ve öğretim ortamına hâlâ belirli ölçüde dışarıdan bakabiliyor olmam, farklı sorular sormama olanak tanıyor.

İki ülkenin yükseköğretim sistemleri arasında benzerlikler olduğu kadar farklılıklar da bulunuyor. En belirgin fark ise öğretimdeki esneklikler ve araştırmaya ayrılabilen zaman açısından ortaya çıkıyor. Finlandiya üniversiteleri hem öğrencilere hem de akademisyenlere daha esnek yollar sunuyor. Son derece yapılandırılmış bir yükseköğretim sisteminden geldiğim için bu duruma alışmak başlangıçta kolay olmadı. Ancak söz konusu esneklikler, araştırma faaliyetlerini planlamayı ve zamanı etkili şekilde yönetmeyi kolaylaştırıyor; ayrıca farklı araştırma alanlarında çalışma fırsatları yaratıyor.

Soru: Finlandiya eğitim sisteminde öğretmenin rolünü nasıl tanımlarsınız?
Öğretmenler Finlandiya eğitim sisteminde önemli karar vericiler arasında yer alıyor. Sınıfları için en doğru kararları verebilecek bilgi ve donanıma sahip olduklarına güveniliyor ve öğrencilerinin öğrenme ihtiyaçları doğrultusunda özerk hareket edebiliyorlar. Bununla birlikte, okullar da toplumda, teknolojide ve ekonomide yaşanan küresel değişimlerden bağımsız değil.

Bence Finlandiyalı öğretmenler de dünyanın her yerindeki meslektaşları gibi, yapay zekâ uygulamalarının yaygınlaşması ve çok kültürlü sınıfların artması gibi son derece dinamik değişimlere uyum sağlamaya çalışırken, aynı zamanda eğitim sorumluluklarını en iyi şekilde yerine getirmeye gayret ediyorlar.

Q: Could you briefly introduce yourself and your background?
I have been working as a faculty member at the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Turku since 2018. Earlier, I worked at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara for nearly 20 years. My research interests are at the intersections of mathematics education, teacher education and researcher education fields.

Q: How did your academic experience in both countries shape your career as a researcher, and what differences between Finland and Türkiye stood out to you?
Being a teacher educator and a faculty member in both countries has been a productive challenge in my career. Moving to the culture, education system, teacher education system, higher education system and university culture of Finland has encouraged me to develop different perspectives. Yet, I am still partly outsider to research and teaching in Finland which allows me ask different questions. There are similarities and differences in higher education systems but, the biggest difference is in terms of flexibilities in teaching and available time for research. Finnish universities provide more flexible paths to the students and instructors, which was not easy to adjust at first as I come from a highly structured higher education system. These flexibilities enable organizing research activities and managing time effectively and have led me to the opportunities to work on different research interests.

Q: How would you describe the role of a teacher in Finnish education system?
Teachers are important decision-makers in Finnish education system. They are trusted that they know the best for their classrooms and have the autonomy to decide for their students’ learning needs. However, schools are not immune to the worldwide changes in society, technology and economy. I think Finnish teachers, like all teachers, are trying to navigate these highly dynamic changes, such as AI and multicultural classrooms, and fulfil their responsibilities.

🌸 Haaga’daki Ormangülü (Rhododendron) Parkı, bitkiler çiçek açtığında Helsinki’ye gelen herkesin mutlaka görmesi gereken gerçek bir mücevherdir.

Park alanı hem halka açık bir park hem de üniversiteye bağlı bir araştırma bahçesi olarak hizmet vermektedir. Ormangülleri ve açelyaların en yoğun çiçeklenme dönemi genellikle haziran ayının başlarıdır. Açelyalar daha erken açar ve bazı yıllarda ormangüllerinden daha uzun süre çiçekli kalıp hatta yaz ortası sonrasına kadar güzelliklerini koruyabilirler.

Çiçeklerin ihtişamı yıldan yıla değişiklik gösterir; genellikle çok verimli ve gösterişli bir yılın ardından daha mütevazı bir çiçeklenme dönemi yaşanır. Her yıl binlerce Helsinki sakini ve bahçecilik meraklısı, bu büyüleyici manzaraya tanıklık etmek için parkı ziyaret eder. 🌺🌿

🌸Rhododendron Park in Haaga is a true gem that deserves to be seen by all visitors to Helsinki when the plants are in bloom

The grounds serve as both a public park and a university research garden. The peak blooming season for both the rhododendrons and the azaleas is early June. The azaleas bloom first and sometimes longer than the rhododendrons, even after midsummer.

The splendour of the flowers varies with each year; generally a good year is followed by a more modest one. Thousands of Helsinki residents and gardening enthusiasts visit the park each year to witness the spectacle. 🌺🌿

1. Could you tell us briefly about your background?
My background is built on both Finland and Türkiye, as I have a Turkish father and a Finnish mother. I was born in Espoo, Finland, and completed two university degrees in Finland. During my earlier career as a professional basketball player, I spent four years living across three cities in Türkiye and also played for the Finnish men's national team.

2. How has your bicultural background shaped your life and career?
Above all, growing up between two cultures has been a real privilege, as it lets me see the world from two rather different perspectives. I find this particularly valuable in today's global climate, where it helps in understanding the reasoning behind political decisions in different countries. Both cultures also share a strong emphasis on perseverance and hard work, and I was raised to take the best from each. That combination is behind everything that followed — the career as a professional athlete, the studies, and today a partnership at Nordic Law.

3. Could you share how Nordic Law supports Turkish companies and investors, and what are the key factors strengthening cooperation between Finland and Türkiye?
On the company side, we help Turkish businesses access the EU market through Finland. That can mean supporting founders who relocate here and set up their company, or established Turkish companies expanding through a Finnish subsidiary. Either route opens the EU market and gives them a meaningful new avenue for growth. Naturally we continue to support their operations also after the initial expansion.

For investors, we handle the legal side of investment processes into Finnish companies, and as the relationship deepens, we can also help identify target companies for them. The same expansion logic extends to investors’ portfolio companies expanding into the EU market.

Having worked with clients on both sides, two things stand out for me to strengthen Finland–Türkiye cooperation. Both have their own cultural characteristics, and cooperation works best when both sides take time to understand and respect the other. Equally important is to look for what we have in common, such as the strong technical expertise. Finland's NATO membership already brings us closer than before and building on that shared ground can help both countries succeed economically and politically. There are a lot of opportunities – we just need to connect the dots, be patient, and execute.

1928 yılında tamamlanan Yrjönkatu yüzme salonu, Finlandiya’nın ilk ve en eski halka açık yüzme havuzudur. 1920’lerin klasik mimari anlayışını yansıtan havuz binası, mimar Väinö Vähäkallio tarafından tasarlanmıştır. Yrjönkatu yüzme salonu, kültürel ve tarihî açıdan önemli bir değere sahiptir. Havuz alanları ise ziyaretçilerine geleneksel bir spa atmosferi sunmaktadır.

Yrjönkatu swimming hall, completed in 1928, is the first and oldest public swimming pool in Finland. The pool building was designed by architect Väinö Vähäkallio, representing the classicism of the 1920s. Yrjönkatu swimming hall has cultural and historical value and its pool premises offer a traditional spa atmosphere.
