Glad to catch up with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Istanbul today, while in transit from Kazan back home to Singapore. We last met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg last November.

Türkiye remains an important partner for Singapore, and our friendly relations run deep. While our formal diplomatic ties were established in 1969, our historical links trace all the way back to 1865, when the Ottoman Empire first established a Consulate in Singapore.

Since upgrading our relations to a Strategic Partnership in 2014, our cooperation has expanded across trade, investment, and connectivity. Today, President Erdoğan and I had a fruitful exchange on how to further deepen these ties, creating even more opportunities for our businesses and people. We also discussed the rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape, reaffirming our shared commitment to a rules-based international order.

President Erdoğan fondly recalled his last visit to Singapore in 2014 and the orchid named in his honor. I look forward to welcoming him back to our shores soon, and to strengthening the Singapore-Türkiye partnership in the years ahead.

Candid exchange of views on the situation in the Middle East with Bahrain Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Bin Rashid Al Zayani, Jordan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Kuwait Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah and Oman Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Bin Hamad Al Busaidi.

The ongoing conflict has affected several countries in the region, heightening tensions, undermining stability and putting civilians at risk. Singapore stands in solidarity with our partners in the Gulf and their peoples during this challenging time.

I thanked my counterparts for the assistance extended by their authorities in facilitating the departure of Singaporeans during this period. Our officials remain in close contact to ensure the safety and well-being of Singaporeans who remain in their countries.

A prolonged conflict would have wider repercussions on global security, energy markets and international trade, with implications beyond the region, including for Singapore.

Singapore was one of the co-sponsors of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution on Iran’s attacks on the Gulf Cooperation Council countries that the UNSC adopted on 11 March. We support the efforts of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan and other Gulf partners to restore peace and stability as soon as possible.
