LGE RESULTS A VICTORY FOR THE PEOPLE

Here in PaP, we were able to win 2/3 LGE seats; the Claxton Bay/Pointe a Pierre seat and the Marabella East seat (taken from the PNM), unfortunately we lost the Cocoyea/Tarouba seat by just 32 votes.

For those who supported us, we say a big thank you and for those who worked along side us, it could not have been possible without you. Whilst we celebrate, more work needs to be done for the upcoming GE, and more ground needs to be covered, especially in making gains on the undecided voters.

The true test which is the at the GE polls will require all hands on deck and losing the San Fernando City Corporation by a mere 100+ votes (within 2 seats) shows that EVERY VOTE COUNTS and the importance of mobilizing.

We need this PNM Gov. out; too many are now jobless, the victims of discrimination, the victims of crime, and simply feel hopeless and voiceless. We need to make a stand and ensure the message is spread across the constituency.

For the two Councillors within the Constituency; Nadia Khan Mohammed and Kern Ramdin, a well deserved congratulations and continue to serve the people as always.

The next fight against the injustice of the PNM Gov. starts NOW!

MEDIA RELEASE

UNC calls for correction to misleading news article

The United National Congress says the Guardian Media group must correct the erroneous and misleading headline carried on the websites of CNC3 and Guardian newspaper:

“UNC withdraws case seeking to block the sale of the refinery” published online by Derek Achong on October 24, 2019.

The United National Congress reiterates that the party did not pursue any legal action with respect to the sale of the refinery.

The fact is that some concerned citizens took court action which they have now withdrawn in light of the fact that the Government relented and convened a meeting of the Joint Select Committee on Energy Affairs next week.

A constitutional claim was filed against the failure of Finance Minister Colm Imbert in his capacity as Chairman of the JSC to convene a meeting for close to two years and in the claim they sought a stay preventing the government from making any further decisions on the sale of the Petrotrin refinery until the matter is determined.

The UNC wishes to state categorically, again, that these individuals pursued this matter in their private capacity as they are entitled to do.

We maintain our position that transparency and accountability are essential in any disposal of public property to private sector entities. Transparency is even more critical now since the Office of the Procurement Regulator is still not operational notwithstanding the law has been passed since 2015.

In her Budget response, Leader of the Opposition Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar said, “While we welcome the decision to sell the refinery to Patriotic Energies and Technologies Limited, we do not trust this government who may, in fact, be setting up the workers.”

This has been and remains the Party’s stated policy on this matter.

We wish to stress, once again, that we are not against the OWTU and workers and indeed wish them well, but we continue to call for transparency, full disclosure and accountability on this refinery deal.

We reject the blatant politicking of the narrative on this matter, which we have been forced to correct on several occasions.

It is the Keith Rowley regime which took the callous and reckless decision to send thousands of workers home when they closed Petrotrin with no coherent transition plan. The same regime haphazardly announced a sale of the refinery, again without any details, leaving the country with more questions than answers.

The Rowley regime has waged war against the workers of Petrotrin, vilifying them, so much so that to this day, many cannot find work elsewhere. The plight of the Petrotrin worker remains the fault of this failed Rowley regime.

As stated previously, the UNC filed no lawsuit seeking an injunction to block the sale of the refinery. We call on Guardian Media to immediately correct their inaccurate reporting and misleading headline.

UNC announces 55 Local Government Candidates

The United National Congress continues to show its readiness for the upcoming Local Government Elections as Political Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar, for a second time in as many weeks, presented the Candidates that the party has selected thus far at last night’s Monday Night Forum in Debe.

Having initially announced its first batch of candidates at the party’s Congress on Sunday 18th August 2019, the UNC introduced additional candidates for the San Fernando City Corporation and some for the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation as part of its dynamic line up last night. This brings the total up to fifty-five (55) candidates announced to date.

As the UNC Leader presented the candidates she pledged to the hundreds present, “I tell you we have a plan, a mission, a vision, and I will take you there. Together we will walk that road to victory. Before you know it, the change will come."

As at Monday 26th August 2019 the UNC had undertaken a meticulous, detailed and stringent screening process for eleven (11) Local Government Bodies inclusive of the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation, Princes Town Regional Corporation, Penal Debe Regional Corporation, Siparia Regional Corporation, Point Fortin Borough Corporation, Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, Mayaro Rio Claro Regional Corporation, Arima Borough Cooperation, Couva Tabaquite Talparo Regional Corporation, Chaguanas Borough Corporation and the San Fernando City Corporation.

The party began its screening process in July having received over 400 nomination forms which comprised citizens from diverse backgrounds, age groups, professions and religious beliefs.

Significantly, the party received nominations from hundreds of young people who have raised their hands to fight for better governance in their communities under the banner of the United National Congress. This large inflow of youth support was equally matched by a large number of nominees coming forward from traditionally PNM-held Corporations and seats, highlighting the need for better representation in these areas.

The United National Congress has been thoroughly impressed by the calibre and skills of the nominees who have appeared before the Screening Committee, given the dynamic mix of intellect, community linkages, grass root involvement, talents and vision they possess. A common quality in all nominees has been the thrust to fight for better governance of our nation.

Those nominees who were not selected have not only pledged to support the candidates that were selected, but have actually began working with them to ensure success at the polls, given the dire state of our national affairs.

The United National Congress continues the screening process on Wednesday 28th August 2019 at the UNC’s East/West Corridor People Centre in Tunapuna from 6:30pm at which time nominees for the Diego Martin Regional Corporation would be screened.
