Did you know? 👀
Sir Sanford Freeling, Governor of Trinidad from 1880–1883, played a major role in shaping the future of Carnival in Trinidad.

During the Canboulay riots of 1881, Freeling sympathized with masqueraders and assured them they would be allowed to celebrate once they kept the town safe from fire caused by lighted torches. His decision to confine the police to barracks was controversial among colonial authorities, eventually leading to his recall to England in 1883.

The events surrounding the Canboulay riots also transformed Carnival itself. From 1884, masqueraders were only allowed onto the streets after 6 a.m. on Carnival Monday. This is what gave rise to the tradition known as Jour Ouvert (J’ouvert), which remains an important part of Carnival today.
