Rotunda Gallery TT Highlighting artworks being displayed by local artists in the Rotunda Gallery of the Red House, Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago.
(4)

The Rotunda Gallery is part of the Parliament’s outreach programme. Upon the return to the Red House the entrance space in the basement of the Rotunda was used to display artwork of local artists. This was done to allow a different category of persons access to the Red House while adding aesthetically to the visitor experience. There have been several exhibitions over the gallery’s 18 month existe

nce including International Women’s Day, Carnival, Indian Arrival Day, See the Beauty Around Us and World Book Day.

This piece visually explores the theme, unity in diversity, through its representation of the island’s complex history, from past, through present and into the future.

Sails of a ghostly ship tell of the voyage of Columbus and the resulting devastation of the indigenous population. African and Indian dancers and drummers continue the story, their labour and cultural differences depicted through the unifying energy of dance and music, as they dance against a background of abstract sugar cane, pulled by a donkey cart.

The presence of a glittering steelpan speaks of brilliance and innovation exemplifying the current time. Hovering over all these diverse elements is a celestial Hand which ignites the rich flare of an oil well and suggests that there is a Divine and loving presence watching over all, enriching the country and uniting its diverse cultures into one.

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” —Steve Jobs
