Virtual Launch of the Port of Spain in Partnership with Habitat for Humanity and USAID sponsored BHA Project "Port of Spain; a Resilient City.

“Home is serving as the place we feel the most safe and have the most hope. But for many, a safe and affordable home remains elusive.

As the economic shocks from this crisis ripple out, the need for affordable, safe and healthy housing is more apparent than ever.

We cannot do our work without your help.” This quote highlights a brief summary of what Habitat for Humanity is all about. On Wednesday 2nd June, 2021, His Worship the Mayor of Port of Spain hosted a virtual launch via Zoom, as the Port of Spain Corporation partnered with Habitat for Humanity and USAID sponsored BHA project “Port of Spain; a Resilient City”.

Since 1997 hundreds of families in need of a "hand up" have worked with us to build or improve a place they can call home. Thousands more have benefited from shelter initiatives and training in money management, life skills, construction techniques and disaster risk reduction.

This multiphase initiative is aimed at supporting and strengthening local capacity with the mandate to make Port of Spain a Resilient City.

This project is intended to advance local commitment and capacity towards developing a disaster risk reduction plan through partnerships, networking, monitoring and creating at the national level a body of engaged and committed stakeholders – called Task Force - learned and ready to initiate this mandate.

Habitat will be supporting members of Council to advance the work initiated by USAID – Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance -BHA (formerly known as OFDA; Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance) through awareness raising and capacity building activities conducive towards identifying gaps, potential solutions and opportunities to collaboratively address disaster risk factors in Port of Spain.

In a presentation by Mr. Mario Roa, Habitat for Humanity DR3 Program Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean he highlighted that The Theory of Change for Port of Spain lies within situations such as Legal Policies and frameworks, Enforced Practices, Priority for Parliament and Government Organizations (changes in administration, policies), governance knowledge and local grassroots information. As well as interventions that lead to impacting on the state and non-state actors in Trinidad and Tobago with the capacities and commitments to accelerate the pathway of Cities knowing better, Cities Planning better and Cities Implementing better. With the strong hope that by 2030 Port of Spain will acquire a Resilient City status.

This year's theme for 2021's World Environment Day is "Ecosystem Restoration".
Ecosystem Restoration means assisting in the recovery of the forest, wetlands, and oceans that have been either destroyed or polluted.
Simple methods as proper waste disposal, cleaning of beaches and mangroves, and planting of trees in dying forest areas or urban areas can all help in restoring the Earth's Ecosystem.
Let's do our part to keep our surroundings clean and safe.

The Vaccination Drive for Local Government personnel continues today!

Many employees will get the jab over the course of the next few days as we seek to vaccinate frontline essential workers as part of the National COVID-19 Vaccination Programme.

With over six thousand (6000) essential workers within the corporations it was necessary to have this essential personnel vaccinated. This vaccine allows the immune system to attack the virus and fight off infection once exposed this reduces the chance of contracting the virus and the chance of severe infection.

Wash your hands, wear masks, virtual meetings, vaccines, social distancing, and the instruction to stay inside, these are all sentences and words we use now every day. With the rise in the number of cases and what is being called the third wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Trinidad and Tobago, what was customary has changed to what is being referred to as the "new normal".
The following images reflect what we as citizens and the leaders of the country have to deal with and without the knowledge beforehand because this is what a virus is especially this virus, it is the unknown, something that changes the body and the habits of life.
What normally would be a regular Statutory Meeting at City Hall with a full Council, Administrative Staff, and Media, today was more or less done fully virtual with all protocols in place.
While this was taking place not too far away at the Nelson Mandela Park, Court Facilities the Public Health Department, and the Ministry of Health continued to administer the COVID-19 Vaccine to the staff of the various Corporations of Trinidad and Tobago.
Let us continue to follow the protocols put in place and let us as individuals set the example and eradicate COVID-19 so we can make this "new normal" a thing of the past.
