HAPPY SHOUTER BAPTIST LIBERATION DAY 2017
To all Serving Members, Retirees/Veterans, their Families, Dependents, Survivors as well as other Stakeholders of the TTDF.
From the TTDFMCSS.

Synopsis:
Spiritual/Shouter Baptist Liberation Day is an annual public holiday celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago on 30 March. The holiday commemorates the repeal on 30 March 1951 of the 1917 Shouter Prohibition Ordinance that prohibited the activities of the Shouter or Spiritual Baptist faith.
The Spiritual Baptist (or Shouter Baptist) faith is a syncretic African religion that combines elements of traditional African religion with Christianity. Despite the African influences, Spiritual Baptists consider themselves to be Christians.

Removing misconceptions about Spiritual Baptists*

Spiritual Baptists belong to a “cult of devil worshippers,” and practise obeah.
These are among the misconceptions which persist about Spiritual Baptists or “Shouters” in contemporary society.
Prof Hazel-Ann Gibbs-De Peza cleared up some of these misconceptions during her recent presentation on “Growth of the Baptist Faith in T&T” at the celebration History Fest 2017 Week, at St Augustine Campus of The UWI.
During his presentation on “The Shouters Prohibition Ordinance of 1917: Constitutional Issues in Enactment and Repeal” campus historian Dr Claudius Fergus reiterated the call for reparations for Spiritual Baptists. Both De Peza and Fergus’ academic presentations dealt with the theme “1917: Liberating Indian Indentured Labourers, War Veterans and the Baptists”. History Fest ended on March 21. It is a precursor to Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day which will be celebrated tomorrow, March 30.
Among those present were The UWI History Department chair Dr Gelien Matthews; and History Department lecturers/facilitator Dr Allison Ramsay, Dr Sherry Ann Singh and Dr Michael Toussaint. They were joined by Express columnist Prof Bridget Brereton and businessman Ray Brathwaithe. Each speaker identified struggles the religion underwent, discussed why it was not initially considered a religion, and made reference to its tenets like “shouting” and ringing of bells.

Delaware National Guard rehabs Trinidad school

The Delaware National Guard USA, along with members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force have been working to remodel a school in Trinidad. Members installed drop ceilings and replaced lead pipes at Blanchisseuse Primary School. The building is used by about 90 students and five staff members, as well as acts as a community emergency shelter during natural disasters.

The work is coordinated through the U.S. Embassy, working with the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force. Civil engineers, medical personnel and security forces have been working side by side on various projects, as well as offering specialized training to community members. The partnership started in 2005.

Former St Mary's boy pilots C-130 with Delaware National Guard

Trini born U.S. based pilot Kieran Thorne got lucky this week. He had the honor of flying in members of the Delaware National Guard (DNG) to Trinidad and Tobago for a week long Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE) with the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF).

A volunteer with the U.S. Air National Guard which allows Cpt Thorne to work part time with the DNG, said he heard about the visit and immediately signed up to pilot the C-130 military aircraft. He was selected and on Sunday flew into Piarco airport bringing Delaware’s Commanding Officer Maj. Gen. Frank Vavala and over 30 soldiers and airmen who will participate in the eleven year partnership.

Cpt. Thorne grew up in San Juan and now lives in New Hampshire. His regular job is a First Officer with American Eagle which he has been doing for seven years.

Cpt. Thorne migrated with his family to the U.S. when he was twelve after only one year at St. Mary’s College. He got his primary education at the San Juan Presbyterian school. A lover of soccer and swimming Cpt. Thorne said it was always his dream to be a pilot and be part of the U.S. airforce. He usually boasts to his friends about T&T’s great food, beaches and parties.

Cpt. Thorne visits Trinidad annually to see his grandmother Popolin Rampallard, 88.

Mending the Psychological Contract at Work

At the core of our relationship with work, lives the psychological contract — comprised of our perceptions and beliefs concerning the exchange agreement that exists between ourselves and our employer. Unfortunately, when balance is not achieved within this exchange, breaches of the contract do occur. This is quite common and can ultimately result in lowered levels of trust, job satisfaction and performance.
