Down Syndrome Family Network

Down Syndrome Family Network πŸ’› Our mission is to advocate for the value, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome.

We believe in presuming competence, inspiring inclusion, and empowering individuals to reach their fullest potential. Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder characterized by the presence of an extra #21 chromosome. Instead of having 46 chromosomes in each of his/her cells, a person with Down syndrome has 47. The extra chromosome may be derived from either the egg or the sperm. It is believed that

during cell division of a sperm or egg, the two #21 chromosomes do not separate properly (non-disjunction). Thus, one cell will have an extra #21 chromosome, which later, if united with a normal germ cell, which has among others one #21 chromosome, may lead to trisomy 21. The first cell at conception then has 47 chromosomes instead of "normal set" of 46 chromosomes. When this cell with three #21 chromosomes continues to multiply, and the pregnancy is carried to term, a baby with Down syndrome will be born. This form of chromosome error, trisomy 21, is found in about 95% of persons with Down syndrome.

πŸ’™ Thank you, Annisa, for these beautiful words.

It means so much to see the journey of our Founder and President, Glen Niles, and the work of the Down Syndrome Family Network resonate with others in such a meaningful way.

What began with one father’s determination to create greater opportunities for his son has grown through the support of families, self advocates, partners and our wider community into 15 years of advocacy, inclusion and action. πŸ’›πŸ’™

Your words remind us why we continue to push for greater understanding, stronger support, meaningful opportunities and lasting change for persons with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

Thank you for seeing our mission, sharing our story and standing with us. Together, we can continue turning advocacy into action. 🀝✨

Every person deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, work, thrive and dream. πŸ’›βœ¨

When we believe in the potential of persons with disabilities, we don’t just change one life, we build stronger families, more inclusive workplaces, and better communities for everyone. πŸ€πŸ’™

At the Down Syndrome Family Network, we see that potential every single day, and we’re committed to creating opportunities where it can flourish.

If you believe in the potential of persons with disabilities, share this post and help us spread the message that inclusion begins with opportunity. πŸŒπŸ’š

Together, we can create a world where every person is seen, valued, and empowered.
