Happy Republic Day Trinidad and Tobago!!!
Our T&T Our Future: The National Spatial Development Strategy (NSDS) for Trinidad & Tobago aims to plan T&T’s socio-cultural, economic and environment development priorities for the next 20 years.

Our T&T Our Future: The National Spatial Development Strategy (NSDS) for Trinidad & Tobago is a project of the Town & Country Planning Division in the Ministry of Planning & Sustainable Development. The NSDS an update to the 1984 National Physical Development Plan (NPDP) and it aims to renew the relevance of ‘planning’ to a generation. Its strategies and policies will articulate the Government’s vision of sustainable development. The process has emerged out of a need for direction and clarity in coordinating development in the country and prioritizing and rationalizing land dependent decision. The document will provide authoritative guidance and more specifically: • articulate a long term vision for the future of development in Trinidad and Tobago • enunciate the spatial allocations of major land uses • present sectoral development priorities in a holistic fashion • suggest a framework for the co-ordination of an integrated planning system that involves all levels of governance.
Mission: The Town & Country Planning Division of the Ministry of Planning & Sustainable Development is charged with the responsibility for administering the Town and Country Planning Act, Ch. 35:01 of the Laws of Trinidad and Tobago, on behalf of the Minister responsible for town and country planning.

The Ministry of Planning launches the Nation’s Largest Social Innovation Programme
The Minister of Planning and Sustainable Development, Bhoendradatt Tewarie on behalf of the Council for Competitiveness and Innovation (CCI) officially launched the nation’s largest Social Innovation Programme on Wednesday 14 January 2015 at Medulla Art Gallery in Woodbrook.
The programme is aptly called LUMINATION is part of the CCI’s drive to promote and encourage an innovation driven society with the aim of bringing together inspired, passionate individuals in the sphere of social work to encourage innovative solutions to social problems. The tagline is ‘Create the change that changes lives’ and the goal here is to alleviate many of the social issues plaguing Trinidad and Tobago through innovation, to positively impact lives and to light the way for a better future by empowering citizens.
The Lumination Challenge seeks to foster social innovation and experimentation by reducing the associated financial risks through grant funding provided by the CCI. Grant funding from $75,000.00 to $200,000.00 will be disbursed to worthy projects as well as mentoring and project development assistance. Support for the implementation of selected projects will be provided through pilot programmes and experiments. The challenge has also gone out to registered NGOs, social workers, social innovators and youth workers to come up with socially innovative concepts that are yet to be tested or explored in Trinidad and Tobago on a national scale but which have the potential to provide solutions to societal issues not presently addressed by existing institutions, practices or traditions. This year, the challenge encourages innovative solutions to issues pertaining to youth, education and family.
Speaking at the launch the Chairman of the CCI Mr. Richard Lewis stated that “Social Innovation means new ways to solve old problems that are faster, more cost effective, data driven and lead to better results for the public good”. The guest speaker, former national cycling champion Mr. Michael Phillips spoke of his experiences with developing his own social innovations, namely the Keep Moving Family Programme and Fitness Sundays which has encouraged exercise and fitness activities along a blocked section of the Diego Martin Highway every Sunday for the past six years.
Speaking at the launch Minister Tewarie highlighted the fact that “Lumination is indicative of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to fighting injustice and inequality, and to improving the social wellbeing of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago while continuing to focus on and encourage innovative thinking and entrepreneurship. It is an attempt to address the fact that while capitalism can create wealth generating opportunities it does not distribute opportunities for wealth creation very well”.

" I would like to stress the importance and need for incorporating evaluation findings and lessons learned into our decision making processes. We can no longer afford to operate on ‘good ideas’ and ‘hunches;’ we must seek information and ask ‘What does the data suggest?’ and make decisions accordingly."

Ministry of Planning and Development
The Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development, through the National Transformation Unit (NTU), has been working towards building a culture of Results-Based Management (RBM) in Trinidad and Tobago. Much of this work has been centred on institutionalizing Results-Based Monitoring and Evaluation in the public sector; establishing a public sector-wide Assessment and Evaluation Network; and building awareness of evaluation and transformation processes.
As such, the Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development will be hosting the 4th Annual Development Evaluation Forum on November 11th and 12th, 2014 from 8:00am to 4:00pm at the Radisson Hotel, Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain.
This year the theme of the Forum is “Moving Towards a Culture of M&E in Trinidad and Tobago” and the intention is to:
• Present the National Monitoring and Evaluation Policy of Trinidad and Tobago;
• Share information on other recent developments in the area of M&E in Trinidad and Tobago;
• Motivate M&E Practitioners to continue to advocate for the use of RBM in their respective Ministries;
• Solicit feedback on discussion areas; and
• Establish and strengthen the local network of M&E Practitioners.
In addition, the NTU will be presenting the upgraded Development Evaluation Website (www.transforme.gov.tt), which is the first of its kind for Trinidad and Tobago. The aim of the website is to establish communication networks among all Development Evaluation practitioners and stakeholders; create a knowledge hub for the transfer of new and emerging theories and models; facilitate capacity development; and reinforce the use of RBM in the public sector.
