The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs (MSYA) participated in the National Training Agency’s
(NTA) β€œTouch of TVET” Community Outreach Event on Saturday 12 September 2026 at Cedros Secondary School, connecting residents with information, programmes and opportunities for skills development, personal growth and professional advancement.

The community-centred initiative brought together public-sector agencies and other stakeholders to engage directly with residents and promote accessible pathways for training, development and participation in national life.

Representatives of the Ministry’s Youth Division, Physical Education and Sport Division, and National Service Unit interacted with young people, parents and other community members, providing information on the range of programmes and services available through the MSYA.

πŒπ„πƒπˆπ€ 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs (MSYA), in partnership with the National Training Agency
(NTA), today commenced its Principles of Groundsmanship Programme at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba.

The two-week programme, which runs from September 14 to 25, 2026, is designed to build the technical knowledge and practical competencies needed to maintain, improve and manage sporting grounds and facilities throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

The opening session was facilitated by Mr. Ramnath Persad, Lead Facilitator and Head Curator at the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre. Participants engaged in interactive classroom discussions on the various types of turf and grass, industry-standard machinery used in turf maintenance, and best practices for preparing playing surfaces across different sporting disciplines.

The Honourable Phillip Watts, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs and Member of Parliament for La Horquetta/Talparo, joined the Honourable Khadijah Ameen, Minister of Rural Development and Local Government and Member of Parliament, at the distribution of compensation cheques to farmers affected by the construction of the La Horquetta Youth Development Centre.

The initiative reflects Government’s commitment to responsible, fair and people-centred development, ensuring that the concerns of persons whose livelihoods are affected by national and community projects are addressed.

Five farmers received compensation following an assessment and settlement process for crops and ornamental plants affected during preparatory work for the Youth Development Centre.

Minister Watts commended the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, the Rural Development Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited, the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, project personnel and the affected farmers for their collaborative efforts in reaching a fair and properly documented settlement.

He underscored the importance of agriculture to national development, food security and community resilience, while encouraging farmers to continue producing, investing in their livelihoods and sharing their knowledge with younger generations.

β€œOur farmers are essential to Trinidad and Tobago. Their work sustains households, strengthens communities and supports our food security. We want young people to understand that agriculture is not a thing of the past, but an important part of our future, especially when combined with innovation, technology and entrepreneurship,” Minister Watts stated.

πŒπ„πƒπˆπ€ 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs (MSYA), in collaboration with the College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT), has commenced the third cohort of the Hospitality Operation Service Training (H.O.S.T.) programme, with 48 participants enrolled in this latest cohort.

An orientation session was held today for participants at the COSTAATT City Campus, where they received information on the programme and the expectations for the upcoming training sessions.

The 48 participants are divided into two groups of 24 and will participate in the training over a 10-week period. Classes commence on Wednesday 16th September and will be held at COSTAATT, City Campus, Bretton Hall, Port of Spain.
