Strengthening Spanish Education: 19 Teachers Complete Professional Development Programme
In a collaborative venture the Ministry of Education's Curriculum Planning and Development Division (CPDD), through its Modern Languages Unit (MLU) together with the Embassy of Mexico in Trinidad and Tobago (EmbaMEX) and the Centre for Language Learning (CLL) at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, hosted a Professional Development Programme for Secondary School Spanish Teachers. The Closing Ceremony for the first cohort of teachers was held at the UWI CLL today, Wednesday 17th June, 2026.
The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Victor Hugo Morales Meléndez, Ambassador of Mexico, Mrs. Anna Singh, Director of CPDD. Also in attendance were Mr. Flavio Abraham González Hernández, Economic Affairs Attaché in the Embassy of the United Mexican States and Mr. Dev Pooma, Curriculum Coordinator in the CPDD.
Mrs. Anna Singh delivered remarks at the event congratulating the nineteen participant teachers on their successful completion of the programme and urging them to use their training to continue to inspire their students with an enthusiasm for learning foreign language and culture. "I encourage you to share best practices, embrace innovation and foster in your students not only language proficiency, but an appreciation of cultural diversity and global citizenship."
Designed to enhance educators' oral proficiency, reinforce pedagogical strategies for the teaching of writing, and foster the incorporation of authentic cultural content into Spanish instruction, the programme targeted teachers of students from Forms 4 to 6.
Initiatives such as this one valuable strengthening foreign language education and cultural exchange in and beyond classrooms across Trinidad and Tobago.
This programme is a testament to the Ministry of Education's continued commitment to collaborative initiatives that empower teachers and reinforce high quality language education.
