There has been a war brewing in upper St. Ann’s between the Fondes Amandes land owners and the squatter community on the bridge for years. Yesterday I got involved and engaged in a mediation between both sides that was downright brutal at times, threatening at others, and required police presence to calm flaring tempers.
At the heart of the matter were issues that both sides were dug in on and the hardest part was getting two polarized groups to give ground. After all of it we got to an agreement on some issues and both sides shook hands. I told them both if that peace holds I’ll come back in three months and see what I could do to address the other outstanding issues.
Stuart Young asked what’s a Shadow MP. It’s someone who shows up and gets the job done when the actual MP either can’t or won’t. I’m the Shadow MP for Port of Spain North St. Ann’s West, and I respond when people call, and I show them what real representation looks like. Die hard communities don’t have to remain that way. They may be PNM for now, but they’re all learning what it means to have the fix it man on your side.
