Doing Business in the Dominican Republic: What Every Exporter Must Know About Law 173 🇩🇴.
If you’re entering the Dominican market, Law 173 is one of the most critical regulations to understand. Our carousel breaks down the four key aspects every T&T exporter should pay attention to — from dealer protections to contract termination risks.
In the Dominican Republic, Law 173 grants strong, legally protected rights to local distributors, including exclusivity and significant barriers to ending a commercial relationship once it’s registered. For T&T SMEs, this can create long-term financial exposure, with termination penalties that may include compensation for lost profits, investments, and goodwill.
Before signing any agreement, ensure your contracts are carefully structured. Under the CARICOM–Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement, exporters can legally waive Law 173 — but only if the waiver is explicitly stated and the contract is not registered.
Plan strategically. Protect your interests. Consult legal and trade experts before you enter the DR market.
