It was an honor to facilitate a conversation on families and agriculture, at the launch of the Family Farming Decade in Trinidad and Tobago.
Organized by IICA, FAO and the Green Market, with the support of CARIRI, we all payed tribute to families dedicated to feed us and care for our Earth. Ambassador Edgerton shared the Costa Rican experience on building wealth from agriculture. Senator the Honourable Clarence Rambharat, Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries joined the conversation.
We listened to families´ concerns, challenges and pride of their work as we acknowledged their contribution to our well being... All while enjoying a freshly brewed cup of Costa Rican coffee.

‘T&T, small islands like hamsters on wheel’

Costa Rica shares the concerns expressed by Honorable Robinson-Regis regarding the challenges that small countries, not only SIDS, face once they have achieved a certain level of development.
Just like Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica almost 100% of the populations has access to potable water and electricity and they are at the same level of education outcome on PISA evaluations, but both countries are "graduated" from development funds.
This is why Costa Rica promotes other measurements, besided GDP, to accurately assess the accomplishments, needs and challenges that some countries have to overcome.

Last Saturday, Costa Rican President inaugurated solar panel park, which was built by several cooperatives. It will provide solar energy to 5000 families in the Northern part of the country. It is one more effort towards renewal energies.

In the Social Justice International Day we reflect on how to promote it. Oxford University developed a new measurement system, the Multidimensional Poverty Index, which has demonstrated that there are different situations that create poverty, not only income.
Costa Rica believes that new measurements should be taken into account in measuring countries as well, besides the "High Income country" category that does not allow access to developoments funds despite their vulnerability.
Take a look on how these new dimensions change the perception of poverty and income:

The International Pax Natura Foundation delivered recently the 2019 Pax Natura Award to Christiana Figueres Olsen for being a Costa Rican leader globally acknowledged for her fight in matters related to climate change.

The activity relied upon the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs a.i. Lorena Aguilar Revelo and the Minister of Environment and Energy, Carlos Manuel Rodríguez.

Figueres held the position of Executive Secretary of the Framework Convention focused on Climate Change from 2010-2016. She successfully directed the conferences of the Parties in Cancún 2010, Durban 2011, Doha 2012, Warsaw 2013 and Lima 2014, culminating her efforts with the historical 2015 Paris Treaty ratified by 195 countries. Thanks to this Agreement, the fight against the effects leading to climate change is affirmed, which are defined as the important changes that the planet has been suffering from for many decades up to present, and which are the consequence of the green-house gas emissions (GHG) that are causing global warming, in addition.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs a.i. Lorena Aguilar highlighted that , "this is a gesture of appreciation for an individual that returned hope to the world and allowed us to believe that just maybe we can leave a better world behind for the future generations."
