Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith and Minister of Housing, Urban Renewal, Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable @Pearnel Charles Jr. recently accompanied Prime Minister, the Most Honourable @Andrew Holness at the United States Leaders’ Summit on Climate held virtually.

Jamaica is one of forty countries to be invited, as the country is deemed as a key player in the international community in the fight against climate change.

The primary objective of the Summit was to encourage the world’s major economies to enhance ambition to keep the goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius within reach.

The Summit also brought other crucial voices into the conversation by inviting leaders of countries that are key stakeholders in the climate fight, including those that have demonstrated strong climate leadership, are especially vulnerable to climate impacts, or are charting innovative pathways to a net-zero economy.

The High Commissioner and Staff of the High Commission for Jamaica in Port of Spain join with the Jamaican Community in Barbados in honouring the life of Mr. Elias Azan, O.D., former Honorary Consul for Jamaica in that country, by sharing the below Press Release from the current Honorary Consul, Ms. Ella Hoyos.

****PRESS RELEASE BY MS. ELLA HOYOS, JAMAICAN HONORARY CONSUL IN BARBADOS****

Jamaicans Mourn Elias Azan

The Jamaican Community in Barbados is shocked and saddened to learn of the passing on Wednesday afternoon of former Honorary Consul for Jamaica in Barbados Mr. Elias Azan, O.D.

Mr. Azan served as Honorary Consul for Jamaica for over 10 years, during which time he also served as Dean of the Consular Corps of Barbados. Prior to his appointment as Honorary Consul, his service to the Jamaican Community through the Jamaican Association of Barbados both as President and a member of the Executive spanned many years. He was recognized for his service to Jamaica and Jamaicans in Barbados with the award of the Order of Distinction in the 2008 Jamaica National Honours List.

Mr. Azan, the Former Managing Director of Alamac Trading Company, a family-owned export/import Trader located on Fontabelle, Barbados. Alamac Trading distributed many established Jamaican brands and was also the manufacturer/distributor of Herrs Brand of Chips in Barbados. A few years after the passing of his father Mr. Lutfy Azan, the business was divested and the family relocated to Jamaica.

Mr. Azan was at the time of his passing in Jamaica, the Group Director of Operations of Bashco Trading Company Ltd. He was also the sitting Chairman of the Munro College Board, having also served as the President of the Munro College Old Boys Association.

He is remembered as a family man, an affable, philanthropic and community spirited businessman and a committed Christian. His active participation and many leadership roles in the Abundant Life Assembly and later New Dimensions Ministries offered him opportunities to serve and to touch the life of many Barbadians as well.

Honorary Consul for Jamaica in Barbados Ella Hoyos in response to news of his passing said, “Elias was such a gregarious, warm, generous and committed member of the Jamaican Community that everyone will remember him fondly. He was such a patriotic, big hearted, engaged, and enthusiastic Jamaican who also possessed an enormous regional spirit. His passing is a blow to our community and I am sure to his many Barbadian friends who also knew and loved him and to whom he became family over his many years living here.

We extend our deepest condolences to his cherished wife of nearly 40 years Yasmin, his beloved sons Lutfy and Omar, his dear mother Angeline, and his siblings Joseph and Donna.

May his soul rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon him.”

Minister Kamina Johnson Smith during her intervention in the 10th #UKCaribbean Forum welcomed the UK government's effort to create a more transparent immigration system including its new policy that allows international students remaining in UK to work after completion of studies as well as the removal of the current cap for skilled workers.

The Foreign Minister however, highlighted the immigration issues that exist between the Caribbean and the UK, including concerns of brain drain of professional health workers and teachers from the Caribbean, which has negatively impacted the Caribbean.

She also spoke to deportation & windrush, noting that the Caribbean welcomes the efforts of the UK in writing the wrongs of the Windrush Scandal including measures such as the Windrush Compensation Scheme.
