DIVALI 2016 GREETINGS FROM HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR ALDERMAN HAJI KAZIM HOSEIN
As we join together to celebrate the festival of light, Divali, it is essential that we remember the significance of this wonderful celebration – the triumph of light over darkness, love over hate, good over evil. Divali is yet another testament to the diversity of our nation, a festival transplanted here by our East Indian ancestors and steeped in rich Trinidadian flavour.
While lighting deyas, enjoying the cuisine, and gathering with friends and family, I urge you to reflect on the light that is within each of us, and focus on seeing that light in others, so together we can overcome any darkness in our lives and in our nation. Remember that goodness prevails, in spite of our reasons to despair and let that give you the hope and motivation that you need to keep moving forward.
This year, Divali falls very close to the conclusion of our city’s Help 4 Haiti Charity Drive, so it is extremely fitting that, as a city, we promote our capacity for goodness at the same time as our Hindu brothers and sisters. In San Fernando, we are very fortunate to have a wonderful community spirit of volunteerism, which has made our city safer, more beautiful and prosperous. The charitable works of all our donors and volunteers will greatly impact the recovery of the families affected by Hurricane Matthew.
We must promote the message of overcoming darkness and negativity in Trinidad and Tobago by maintaining the focus on righteousness and the good we can do for others. It is in giving that we receive and it is through positivity that we can continue breeding positivity. This is the message that we must impart to our children, to look for the light in others and treat everyone in our wonderful, diverse nation with goodwill, love and respect.
On behalf of the San Fernando City Corporation, I wish all citizens in our blessed city, across the nation and around the world, a Happy and Prosperous Divali.
