🚂 The Last Train to San Fernando

This striking painting by talented local artist Shireen Ragoobir captures the last train to San Fernando, recalling an important chapter in the city’s history.

“The featured painting is an imaginative composition inspired by TGR No. 11, the historic locomotive displayed at Harris Promenade in San Fernando. Drawing from the distinctive form and nostalgic character of the locomotive, the work reimagines the subject through an expressive, impressionistic approach. Loose brushwork, vibrant colour, and the interplay of light and atmosphere transform the locomotive into a dynamic focal point, while connecting the historic object to Trinidad’s cultural landscape and visual heritage.”

ℹ About the Artist

Shireen graduated from The University of the West Indies in 2021 with a BA in Visual Arts with First Class Honours. She is an artist, illustrator, graphic designer and Visual Arts teacher whose creative work includes paintings, murals, book illustrations and digital art. She is also the founder of NightOwl Designs and contributed to the large mural displayed on NALIS’s Abercromby Street wall.

📚✨ CITY OF SAN FERNANDO LAUNCHES CHILD - FRIENDLY LITERACY INITIATIVE ✨📚

ON Tuesday 8th September, 2026, the City of San Fernando proudly launched the San Fernando Child-Friendly Literacy Initiative in partnership with Books Build Bridges and Better World Books at San Fernando City Hall Auditorium.

With 10,000 children’s books generously donated by Better World Books, this initiative will help expand access to reading resources for children, schools and communities across Trinidad and Tobago. 📖❤️

The launch also highlighted the City’s ongoing commitment to creating a more child-friendly San Fernando. For the past three years, the City has been working with UNICEF on initiatives that give children greater opportunities to learn, participate, express themselves and thrive.

The literacy initiative goes beyond books, with upcoming student debates and an Interschool Child-Friendly Mural Competition giving our young people platforms to share their ideas, creativity and voices. These activities will continue into San Fernando City Month in November.

His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Robert Parris, recently received a courtesy call today from Mrs. Universe Trinidad and Tobago, Ms. Meguella Simon.

During the visit, His Worship and Ms. Simon reflected on her experience and her wonderful involvement in this year’s Mayor’s City Stars Vacation Camp, where she shared her talents and expertise as a Calypso and Soca Teacher. 🎶🌟

The Mayor expressed his sincere appreciation for her time, dedication and contribution to the camp, noting that the children delivered exceptional performances at their Graduation, despite having limited time to prepare.

Discussions also highlighted the City of San Fernando’s Child-Friendly Initiative and the important role Ms. Simon can play as a voice, positive influence and role model for children.
