Happy 70th Anniversary to the People’s National Movement.

Today we honour the legacy of a movement that shaped a nation.

I am pleased and honoured to lead a movement built on strong, principled, and impactful leadership from the four leaders who went before me.

Seventy years ago on January 24, 1956, the People’s Charter was publicly adopted, laying a bold and visionary framework for self government, political education, economic development, housing, education, social services, social equality, and national unity beyond race and class.

From that historic moment, the PNM emerged as Trinidad and Tobago’s first major political party with a continuous organisation and a clear national programme, committed to building a stronger, fairer, and more united nation.

Dr Eric Williams became our first Political Leader, charting the road forward for the Movement with vision, intellect, and precision, and leading our nation into independence.

Following Dr Williams, George Chambers was officially elected Political Leader of the People’s National Movement on May 9, 1981, having already assumed office as Prime Minister on March 30, 1981.

Patrick Manning became Political Leader of the People’s National Movement in January 1987, after serving as Leader of the Opposition from December 19, 1986, and would go on to shape a defining era of leadership and national development.

Dr Keith Rowley became Leader of the Opposition in May 2010 following the party’s defeat in the general election and was officially confirmed as Political Leader of the Movement on June 16, 2010. He served as Political Leader until April 30, 2025, leading the party and country with strength and resolve.

On the eve of this historic anniversary of our beloved party, I had the honour of becoming the People’s National Movement’s fifth Political Leader on June 22, 2025, and the first woman to do so.

I also became the third Political Leader elected following an election defeat, a responsibility I accept with humility, resolve, and an unwavering commitment to the Movement.

I remain fully committed to the People’s National Movement and ready to chart a strong, united, and purposeful way forward for our beloved Movement.

70 years strong. Still serving. Still building.

The PNM San Fernando East Constituency joins with the national community in mourning the passing of Ferdinand “Ferdie” Ferreira, a distinguished political thinker, commentator, and one of the early pillars who helped shape the People’s National Movement. His lifelong commitment to public service and his unwavering belief in the principles of good governance have left an indelible mark on our nation’s political landscape.

From his beginnings as a young dock worker to becoming a respected political advisor, author, and public commentator, Ferdie Ferreira was known for his sharp intellect, fearless honesty, and deep love for Trinidad and Tobago. As a founding member of the PNM, he played a meaningful role in the early development of the party and remained an influential voice throughout his life, offering analysis and guidance that helped generations better understand our country’s political evolution.

As we reflect on his life and legacy, we extend heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his contributions. Trinidad and Tobago has lost a true patriot, a champion of national development, and a guardian of our political heritage. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire us all.

Trinidad and Tobago deserves better than an insecure Prime Minister.

This insecure Prime Minister who acts like she is beyond scrutiny, beyond the people, and beyond accountability, is failing in her most basic duty to the nation.

I have always taken pride in being measured and professional when conducting the business of the people of Trinidad and Tobago, knowing that our nation deserves leaders who uphold a certain standard and class.

It has therefore been disappointing to witness the current Prime Minister conduct herself in a manner that questions whether her uncouthness is due to innate insecurities after her repeated missteps.

Last week, she threw all attempts at civility aside as she threatened a Member of Parliament using the words "cuff you down": these words screamed by a sitting Prime Minister to a Member of Parliament elected to represent thousands of citizens in the sacred Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

This uncivil language has been a pattern since she took office. She marked her 100 days in Office with a speech describing her citizens as "fake elites" and further threatened other citizens that she will "buss yuh heads" - a threat she repeated to show no remorse.

Her uncouth diction and classless behaviour reek of desperation, and it is no surprise that statements such as “I will buss your head” or "I will cuff you down" are received with dismay.

This Prime Minister has normalised a Cabinet lacking the moral compass required for public service and she has empowered Ministers whose primary occupation appears to be social media theatrics rather than responsible governance.

These classless displays merely expose the unfortunate character that now occupies the Office of the Prime Minister.

This is not the leadership the people of this nation deserve.

The Prime Minister should not only apologize to the nation for her classless verbiage but she should also take definitive and immediate steps to raise the standard of the conduct of her Cabinet and her own self.

Trinidad and Tobago deserves better.
