Manuia te a*o o te Falepili, Happy Falepili Day!

Today marks the second anniversary of the entry into force of the Falepili Union Treaty between Australia and Tuvalu.

The Australian High Commission was honoured to welcome leaders from across Tuvalu to celebrate this important milestone, including Governor General Tofiga Vaevalu Falani, Prime Minister Feleti Teo, island chiefs of all eight islands of Tuvalu and members of Government.

Grounded in the Tuvaluan values of falepili – good neighbourliness, care and mutual respect – the Treaty has strengthened cooperation between Australia and Tuvalu.

The Australian High Commissioner to Tuvalu His Excellency David Charlton said “we are celebrating more than an anniversary, but a partnership that has delivered real and tangible result for our peoples and our region”.

Over the past two years, the Falepili Union has helped deliver:
- The Falepili Mobility Pathway, providing Tuvaluans with the opportunity to live, work and study in Australia, while maintaining strong connections to home. Australia’s onshore support service is already supporting 173 Tuvaluans living in Australia.
- Support for Tuvalu’s climate adaptation priorities, helping Tuvaluans stay and thrive in their homeland, including through the Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project.
- Recognition of Tuvalu’s continuing statehood and sovereignty in the face of climate change.
- Increased security cooperation, including support for Tuvalu’s national security priorities and work towards a new National Security Coordination Centre.
- The establishment of the Falepili Stewardship Unit to coordinate implementation of shared priorities under the Treaty.
- The launch of the Falepili Community Grants Program, providing new opportunities to support community-led initiatives across Tuvalu.

The Falepili Union continues to demonstrate what can be achieved through partnership, friendship and mutual respect. As Australia and Tuvalu look to the future, we remain committed to working together to support a secure, climate-resilient future for Tuvalu.

Australian-based Pasifika Film Fest has partnered with Fakaapo Tuvalu Arts Festival to bring you program of free film screenings including Q&As and panel sessions; digital installations from Pacific screen artists; and film-making and acting workshops this week from 17-22 August 2026.

For 75 years, Australians have volunteered overseas to support locally led development and build lasting connections between our countries.
In Tuvalu, 80 volunteer assignments have brought local organisations and Australian volunteers together to support sustainable development through knowledge sharing and collaboration.
Millie Davis, who supported 's Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport as a volunteer National Sport Development Mentor, is one of more than 17,000 Australians to volunteer overseas since 1951.
‘My volunteering experience will shape both my personal and professional journey in the future. The Tuvaluan way of life taught me to value family, friends and community over work, and create healthy boundaries,’ reflects Millie.
Together, Millie and the Tuvalu Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport further strengthened local sporting compet**ions, training programs, and talent identification projects.
‘The work itself showed me that one size does not fit all, and that different approaches are required for different contexts,’ says Millie.

Australia would like to congratulate all Ulu Aliki, P**e Kaupule, delegations from all 8 islands in Tuvalu and the Government of Tuvalu on the successful conclusion of the 5th “Fonotaga a Takitaki o Fenua o Tuvalu” Tuvalu Island Leaders Assembly (TILA) held on Vaitupu Island.

TILA ended on a high note, with an agreement reached by Island Leaders on recommendations from the Outcomes Report and the endorsement and signing of the Falekaupule Leaders Communiqué. A Communiqué which will help guide the future development of all Tuvalu’s Falekaupule.

Thank you to the Government of Tuvalu and Island Leaders for their warm welcome of Australian High Commission representatives as observes to this year’s TILA.

Australia has committed to working closely not only with government, but also with island communities, civil society organisations, churches and traditional leaders. The knowledge, wisdom and leadership of the Falekaupule remain essential to ensuring development reflects the needs and aspirations of local communities.

Fishing for economic growth
Australia is proud to support the successful completion of Tuvalu's first sport fishing tourism pilot, delivered through a partnership between the Australia-Pacific Partnerships for Aviation Program (P4A) and the the National Fisheries Corporation of Tuvalu (NAFICOT).
The pilot brought experienced Australian sport fishing guides Justin Duggan and Gavin Platz to Tuvalu to work alongside NAFICOT in exploring the potential for a premium, environmentally sustainable tourism product that showcases Tuvalu's unique marine environment while creating new economic opportunities for Tuvaluans.
By attracting high-value visitors who travel specifically to experience world-class sport fishing, the initiative has the potential to strengthen demand for flights to Funafuti, support local businesses, create employment opportunities and contribute to long-term economic growth. Importantly, the model has been designed to grow carefully and sustainably, ensuring tourism development protects Tuvalu's natural environment, fisheries, culture and communities.
This initiative demonstrates the strength of partnership under the Falepili Union, supporting Tuvalu to grow its economy through sustainable tourism while strengthening aviation connectivity and creating opportunities for future generations.

You must submit your application and pay the visa application charge through your ImmiAccount on the Department of Home Affairs before 11:59 pm AEST TODAY, Saturday 8 August 2026.

Don’t worry if you don’t have all your supporting documents now. You can lodge your application with your passport biodata page and any documents you have and provide the other documents later. You must also have paid your Visa Application Charge (VAC) before the deadline.

The application deadline cannot be extended so please submit your application as soon as possible.

Empowering Ekalesia Kavatoetoe Women through Traditional Crafts Project

Supported under the Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program (DAP), the Empowering Ekalesia Kavatoetoe Women through Traditional Crafts Project has strengthened the preservation of traditional weaving and sewing skills while advancing women’s economic empowerment within the community. Rooted in the cultural heritage of Tuvalu, the project recognises the importance of safeguarding traditional knowledge and passing these skills on to future generations.

Many participants recognised the value of weaving skills not only in preserving cultural practices but also in contributing to their household income and overall family wellbeing. With every stitch in the sewing sessions creating an opportunity for income generation, supporting the economic wellbeing of families and the wider community.

DAP is an initiative of the Australian Government under the Falepili Union, helping Tuvaluans to stay and thrive in Tuvalu.
