While much of Funafuti is still resting, our dedicated waste team is already hard at work- sweeping, collecting, and cleaning to keep our capital beautiful.
From the first light of dawn, these everyday heroes ensure our streets, public spaces, and shoreline are safe, clean, and welcoming for all.
Maloo Team TFS.

Littering Survey- complete 01/05/2026.
After a long and productive week, our DWM team has successfully concluded a Littering monitoring survey across all Funafuti islets.
From dawn to dusk, our staff walked shorelines, recorded waste types, and assessed litter accumulation- all to gather critical data on how waste moves through our islands.
This survey would not have been possible without the dedication of our team, the cooperation of local communities and the Funafuti Kaupule, and the guidance of our technical partners, CSIRO and SPREP’s Pacific Ocean Litter Project.
Fakafetai lahi to everyone who supported this important work. Rest well, team- you have earned it.

Our dedicated teams from the DWM, the Department of Environment and Funafuti Kaupule recently came together for a vital Litter Monitoring survey on Fongafale and surrounding islets.
Under the expert guidance of scientists from CSIRO and the SPREP Pacific Ocean Litter Project (POLP), we conducted a structured, science-based survey of debris along our shoreline.
This is not just a clean-up - it is a standardised methodology that allows us to:
• Accurately measure the types and quantities of litter
• identify the main sources of marine pollution
• track changes over time, and
• make evidence-based decisions on policies, investments, and community actions.
With this data, we can target our limited resources where they will have the greatest impact- whether that means improving waste collection, expanding bans on single-use plastics, or strengthening our Policies.
Maloo Fafetai everyone.
