Taiwan regularly manages a complex environment of natural hazards, including earthquakes, typhoons, flooding, and landslides.
Despite these challenges, Taiwan has a growing capacity in disaster
preparedness and response and has made great strides in the field. This
comprehensive handbook offers valuable insights into Taiwan's disaster
management (DM) system for international planners and practitioners who may
work alongside Taiwan's first responders.
Key highlights of Taiwan's DM capabilities include:
💡The National Fire Agency's training complex, the largest of
its kind in Asia.
💡Robust search and rescue capacity with proven expertise from
responding to numerous international disasters.
💡A whole-of-society resilience initiative that facilitates
large-scale disaster preparation across Taiwan.
The progress is clear: the 2024 Hualien earthquake resulted in dramatically
fewer fatalities than the devastating 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake, showcasing a
major improvement in resilience. Taiwan continues to strengthen its domestic
capacity to save lives and alleviate human suffering.
