Now is the time to sign up to a free online course. Earlier this year I took part (for part of the course) in the Technology Entrepreneurship course that is put on by Stanford University (more details can be found by looking around the SU venture-lab site for the current offering). However, because of time pressure and other commitments I want to try something a little less challenging and so I think I will opt for Tina Seelig's 10-week course on Creativity. Hopefully, I can think up some new ideas over the next few months. http://venture-lab.org/creativity

Some work efficiency experts believe that people can only concentrate for 90 minutes before needing to take a break. A quiet, well-lit, air-conditioned reading room like this one by the Golden Lion Lake in Kaohsiung (close to our home) is certainly a good way of making the most of 90 minutes in the early evening.

My purpose is to be able to improve the usefulness of the Excel spreadsheets I constantly use to keep my accounting records and hopefully for other uses, too. My home office - a modern office, that is functional and efficient and that enables one to both work and to relax, that reflects the local culture, but has a global outlook, that has enough equipment to get the job done, enough drawers for the paperwork that needs to be kept. an open balcony, and extra seating for occasional visitors (not shown).

When in elementary school I was very interested in writing and at about the age of 10 I started to write a weekly newspaper called "Animal Life". It only had a circulation of about 4 to 6 for each issue, but we did not have photocopiers then and so I had to write each copy out by hand. I pressed on with this project until I reached Issue 100 (as shown) at the age of 12. I still have all 100 issues more than 45 years later. I don't think any of my school teachers were ever aware of this pastime, as what I did at school and outside school were quite different. In fact, outside school I did the things I wanted to, and at school most things were what I did not particularly want to do. Motivation is the key to any learning pursuit.
