苗栗（中文羅馬字：Miaoli；客家話: 四縣腔客拼Meuˇ lid，海陸腔客拼Miau lidˋ? 苗栗地名來自原住民道卡斯族巴利社（Bari），其社名之原住民語意為平原。最初遷移至此的客家人與閩南人以其音近似貓科動物貓貍之發音，即以此作為地名。其後官方文書亦有使用近音之貓裏、貓裡或貓里。
