環境教育一直是營建署設立都會公園的主要目標之一。中都管理站表示，臺中都會公園園區地處大肚山台地稜線上，面積88公頃，海拔310公尺，接近台地的最高點，視野開闊景觀壯麗，台地獨特的環境特色也孕育出獨有生態體系。包括珍貴的大肚山平埔族文化、軍事雕堡等歷史遺跡，還有步道、據點及遊客中心、展示，都是提供推動環境教育最佳的資源與設施。

因此臺中都會公園管理站自成立以來，每年都針對不同對象，舉辦各種環境教育活動及課程，也深入台中地區中、小學校實施環境教育課程，多年來不僅培訓不少環境教育人才，累積豐富的環教經驗。

臺中都會公園管理站表示，自環境教育法100年6月正式實施後，為了在環境教育法的基本概念下持續推動環境教育，臺中都會公園管理站也積極爭取成為環境教育設施場所；在歷經書面審查、專家學者實地探勘及相關資料修訂補正等程序，終於通過並正式取得環境教育設施場所認證。
