TR Foo Teow Lee had a warm discussion with Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Yuan Johnny Chiang this week. Deputy Speaker Chiang has been a strong supporter of the friendship between Taiwan and Singapore, having chaired the Singapore parliamentary friendship group for several years. Both he and TR Foo affirmed the strong economic and people-to-people ties between Taiwan and Singapore, and exchanged views on recent developments relating to AI adoption, advanced manufacturing, and energy resilience.

What enables a small state like Singapore to navigate an increasingly uncertain world with confidence?

Trade Representative Foo attended the Leaders of the East Forum organised by the Taiwan Listed Companies Association (TLCA) on 15 April, where guest speakers including Taipei Representative Tung Cheng-yuan and TLCA Vice Chairman Lai Sun-quae shared perspectives on Singapore’s development and Taiwan’s future trajectory.

In her remarks, TR Foo highlighted that a defining trait of Singapore since independence, is our strong emphasis on crisis preparedness at every stage of nation building. This mindset enables Singapore to respond quickly to geopolitical pressures, economic volatility, and global risks with clarity and composure.

Taipei Representative Tung highlighted talent policy as one of the areas where Singapore offers the most valuable lessons. He identified three core pillars of its success: meritocracy, good governance, and social harmony.

I had a delightful evening at Scanteak’s Spring Reception recently. I got to witnessed Scanteak’s excellent achievements in Taiwan over the past three decades and also met many Taiwanese friends at the reception, who have been supportive of Scanteak over the years.

Scanteak’s continued expansion in Taiwan is testament to both its confidence in the market, and Taiwanese consumers’ recognition of its quality products. I’m sure Scanteak will continue to flourish and I wish Scanteak and its Chairman Lim Pok Chin continued success in the years to come!

Trade Representative Foo paid an introductory call on Premier Cho Jung-tai recently and discussed the vibrant economic and people-to-people linkages between Taiwan and Singapore. Taiwan became Singapore’s largest trading partner in 2025 with over S$170 billion in trade, reflecting the interdependence of the semiconductor ecosystem and both sides’ strong economic performance last year. They also exchanged views on Taiwan and Singapore’s progress in AI development and its adoption, talent development, and economic competitiveness. Premier Cho gifted TR Foo with an elegant replica of painter Kuo Hsueh-hu’s (郭雪湖) famous “Festival on South Street” 《南街殷賑》 depiction of Dadaocheng and Dihua Street.

新加坡駐台北商務辦事處符秀麗代表近日拜會行政院長卓榮泰，雙方就臺星之間蓬勃發展的經貿往來與緊密的民間交流進行深度討論。2025 年，臺灣已成為新加坡最大的貿易夥伴，雙邊貿易總額突破 1,700 億新幣，反映出半導體產業鏈的高度互補，以及雙方去年整體經濟表現強勁、相互帶動的成果。此外，雙方並就臺星在人工智慧的發展與應用、人才培育以及提升經濟競爭力等議題交換看法。卓院長並致贈符代表一幅精緻複製畫，為畫家郭雪湖名作《南街殷賑》，畫作生動描繪了早期大稻埕與迪化街的繁榮景象。

Trade Representative Foo Teow Lee met Taoyuan Mayor Chang San-cheng on 23 March, where they had a warm exchange on innovation and AI-driven transformation.

Mayor Chang has championed a range of AI-driven initiatives in Taoyuan, including the Smart Industry Academy and the Expanded Lung Cancer Screening Programme. Trade Representative Foo shared Singapore’s plans to establish a National AI Council to drive AI-led transformation across key sectors, and invited Mayor Chang to visit the upcoming “Kampong AI” park at one-north when it is completed in 2028.

新加坡駐台北商務辦事處符秀麗代表於 3 月 23 日拜會桃園市長張善政，雙方就創新發展及人工智慧 (AI) 驅動的數位轉型進行了熱切的意見交流。

We were delighted to welcome Mayor Alex Yam of Singapore’s North West District to Taipei for the 2026 Taipei Smart City Summit and the 2026 Taipei International Cities Forum this week and facilitate some of his engagements here!

Those who spend time in both Singapore and Taipei will notice many similarities between the two cities — from energy-efficient buildings to reliable public transport and elderly-friendly pedestrian crossings. These shared strengths reflect how both sides continue to exchange ideas and collaborate on building smarter, more liveable urban spaces.

Mayor Yam also took the opportunity of his visit here to meet with some other mayors and legislators to exchange views on legislative work and best practices on running a city. 🏙️🌳🏡

Trade Representative Foo Teow Lee met Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) Chairman Huang Kuo-chang earlier this week. They had a good discussion on Taiwan’s domestic developments and cross-strait relations. Chairman Huang also shared about TPP’s priorities, as well as the interests and concerns of the younger generations of Taiwanese.

I was pleased to call on Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen recently. It was heartening to see for myself and hear from Mayor Lu how rapidly Taichung has developed in recent years. Singapore companies have also played a role in Taichung’s ongoing efforts to provide quality public transportation services. Mayor Lu and I also had a delightful exchange on our local delicacies, including Taiwan’s beef noodle soup and our Hainanese chicken rice.

While in Taichung city, I also took the opportunity to visit Micron and TSMC, which have presence in Singapore. It was illuminating to learn about the rapid development of high-bandwidth memory technology in recent years and how companies are striking a balance between development and promoting ecology and biodiversity!

As fellow trading hubs, there’s much room for Singapore and Taichung to deepen cooperation in trade and urban development, and I look forward to working more closely with Taichung City.

日前，非常榮幸前往台中市政府拜會盧秀燕市長。

能夠親眼見證並聽取盧市長分享台中近年來的快速發展，令人感到振奮。新加坡企業也與台中共同攜手，在推動高品質大眾運輸服務中，扮演了一定的角色。此外，我與盧市長也針對新加坡與台中的特色美食進行了愉快的交流，從台灣的牛肉麵到新加坡的海南雞飯，話題十分豐富。

在台中期間，我也特別造訪在新加坡皆有投資設廠營運的美光（Micron）與台積電（TSMC）。這趟參訪深具啟發，不僅了解到高頻寬記憶體技術的飛速進步，也看到企業致力在追求技術發展的同時，落實生態環境與生物多樣性的保護。

作為同樣具備貿易樞紐地位的城市，新加坡與台中在經貿與城市發展領域仍有相當大的合作潛力。期待未來能與台中市政府持續更多面向的緊密合作！
