🔥 Does it matter what you wear under your firefighter suit ?

EN 469 standard evaluates the protective performance of firefighter suits under specific test conditions.

However, in actual operations, firefighters also wear thermal underwear under their firefighter suits.

A 2025 flashover simulation study found that some synthetic fiber underwear, including clothing made of polyester, may melt under extreme temperatures, increasing the risk of skin contact burns.

Therefore, thermal underwear is an important component of the overall protection system.

How much difference can a few centimeters of shoulder pad thickness make ?

When firefighters wear trousers, breathing apparatus, and other equipment simultaneously, shoulder pressure can build up quickly, especially during extended periods of work.
A well-designed pressure-relieving shoulder pad does much more than just improve comfort:

🔹 Wider Contact Area
This helps distribute pressure across the entire shoulder, rather than concentrating it on the narrow shoulder straps.

🔹 3D Mesh Structure
This forms a cushioning air layer, improving comfort and helping to reduce direct heat transfer.

⚠️ Could high-pressure washing be compromising your turnout gear ?

❌ High-pressure stream during preliminary cleaning may force contaminants further into the fabric and could affect the construction or protective performance of turnout gear.

✅ Low-pressure stream, combined with a soft-bristle brush and controlled cleaning from top to bottom, provides a gentler approach to removing surface contamination while helping to protect the integrity of the garment.

Firefighting PPE can retain soot, combustion by-products, and other contaminants after an incident. A structured cleaning and decontamination process helps reduce continued exposure and maintain protective performance.

Highlights three key stages of PPE care：
1. On-scene decontamination
Begin preliminary exposure reduction as soon as operationally practical after the incident.
2. Routine cleaning
After returning to the station, clean contaminated PPE according to the approved procedure—and remember that personal hygiene is equally important.
3. Advanced cleaning
When PPE has been heavily soiled or exposed to significant contamination, a more thorough cleaning, inspection, and evaluation process may be required.

Cleaning is not only about appearance. It supports firefighter health, equipment care, and operational readiness.

Always follow departmental procedures, manufacturer instructions, and applicable regional standards.
