The inaugural of the 1st Sectoral Council on Social Affairs, held on July 7, 2026, in Dar es Salaam Tanzania, brought together experts, Permanent Secretaries, Ministers, the EAC Secretariat, EATUC, and the ILO. This gathering marks a historic milestone for our region, creating a dedicated space to address the social dimension of East African integration. During the session, the Sectoral Council adopted the EAC Social Protection Policy and Action Plan, Youth Policy, and the Regional Competency Standards for Domestic Workers.

EATUC fully participated in the experts', Permanent Secretaries', and Ministers' sessions from 2nd to 7th July 2027 . Additionally, the EATUC Chairman, Comrade Hery Mkunda, attended the inaugural session.

The Government of Kenya 🇰🇪 has committed to fast-tracking the ratification of ILO Conventions 189 and 190, following a national tripartite social dialogue and consultation process involving key stakeholders, including our affiliate Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Education Institutions & Hospital Workers. The next step is to submit the proposals to the Cabinet for approval before they are forwarded to Parliament for deliberation.

This marks a significant step toward recognition and dignity for domestic workers, who have historically been excluded from standard labor protections despite their essential role in sustaining households across the country.
