The famous American author,Ernest and Pauline Hemingway spent about 80 days in the present East Africa that is from December 8th,1933 to February 28th, 1934. They dedicated sixty days to hunting safari while the first fortnight in January was interrupted by illness (amoebic dysentery).
Hemingway who arrived in Arusha on December 21st, stopped for swimming at then the New Arusha Hotel.
On December 24th, the group proceeded to the Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Lake Manyara and Tarangire.
Then, he continued to Tanga via Babati, Kondoa and Kibaya. It was in this trip he narratively extolled the beauty of then Tanganyika. In his non-fiction book Green Hills of Africa (1935) and a 1934 Esquire letter, Ernest Hemingway wrote:
"Nothing that I have ever read has given me any idea of the beauty of the country".
"I knew a good country when I saw it".
"I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up that I was not happy".
