I was delighted to host the IEA Executive Director, Dr. Fatih Birol, in Abuja, following Nigeria’s admission as an Association country of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The signing of our first Joint Work Programme at the Presidential Villa, witnessed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, underscores the highest level of Nigeria’s commitment to this partnership and our determination to benefit from the IEA’s wealth of knowledge and expertise.

During our discussions, I briefed Dr. Birol on the reforms being implemented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reposition Nigeria’s gas sector and unlock our abundant gas resources for industrialisation, energy security and economic growth.

I assured him that our gas strategy remains focused on expanding gas utilisation in power generation, fertiliser production, CNG transportation, clean cooking and other productive sectors, while attracting investment across the entire gas value chain.

I sincerely appreciate Dr. Birol’s acknowledgement of Nigeria’s vast gas potential and his commendation of President Tinubu’s efforts to reposition the sector over the past three years.

I also assured him that Nigeria will not disappoint on the issue of sustained political stability. As he rightly noted, political stability is critical to strengthening investor confidence and trust. With the stability and reforms we are building, I am optimistic that investment in Nigeria’s gas sector will rise significantly beyond current levels.

Nigeria is honoured to be at the table of global energy discussions, and we look forward to a stronger and mutually beneficial partnership with the IEA.

It was a pleasure to deliver the Host Country Address at the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII) Technical Workshop in Abuja today, where I called on African leaders to turn climate action into green industrialisation, energy security and sustainable economic growth.

Africa must move beyond repeatedly highlighting our development challenges and take decisive, practical steps to shape our industrial future. Our abundant renewable energy resources, critical minerals, natural gas, agricultural potential and youthful population provide the foundation to build competitive economies and integrated value chains.

Our ambition must go beyond exporting raw materials. We must build competitive African industries, develop integrated value chains and ensure that African resources generate African wealth.

Reliable and affordable energy remains fundamental to this ambition. Natural gas has an important role to play in power generation, fertiliser production, food security, petrochemicals and other industries. At the same time, responsible gas development must go hand in hand with strong environmental stewardship, including reducing methane emissions, ending routine gas flaring and decarbonising petroleum operations.

In Nigeria, we are taking concrete steps through the Decade of Gas Initiative, the Presidential CNG Initiative, the AKK and OB3 gas pipeline projects, gas-to-power investments, expanded LPG access and support for renewable and other low-carbon technologies.

Africa must no longer be viewed merely as a recipient of climate finance, technology or externally defined development models. Africa must be an active architect of the global green economy.

Nigeria remains fully committed to AGII and to working with our partners to translate its vision into practical, bankable and scalable projects that deliver jobs, investment, stronger local value chains and tangible benefits for our people and our continent.

The removal of the petrol subsidy understandably sparked concerns about rising transportation and food costs, as well as the wider pressure on household incomes and businesses. Against this backdrop, the Federal Government has been pursuing practical measures to cushion these effects, including the expansion of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cheaper, cleaner and more sustainable alternative for transportation across the country.

More than $2 billion has already been secured in investments for CNG infrastructure and the wider value chain, reflecting increasing confidence in the potential of our abundant natural gas resources to provide a more affordable energy option for Nigerians.

CNG is no longer simply an alternative for the future. It is already helping transport operators, businesses and vehicle owners reduce fuel costs and improve the sustainability of their operations, with the potential to translate these savings into lower fares and logistics costs for Nigerians.

Our objective goes beyond increasing the number of CNG vehicles and refuelling stations. We want to build an ecosystem that makes transportation more affordable, supports livelihoods, eases pressure on household incomes and improves productivity across our economy.

I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his continued support for the CNG initiative, particularly his recent directive for an additional 500 CNG refuelling stations, bringing the planned national network to 1,000 stations. This will significantly expand access to CNG and accelerate its adoption across the country. I also commend State Governors who have embraced the programme through investments and partnerships, and encourage those yet to do so to key into the initiative in the interest of their people and the commuting public.

As Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), I remain committed to working with State Governments, investors, Pi-CNG, MDGIF, transport operators and other stakeholders to deepen domestic gas utilisation and expand CNG infrastructure.

As Chairman of the National Economic Council, your leadership remains critical to advancing the economic transformation agenda of the Renewed Hope Administration under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

On this special occasion, I wish you continued good health, wisdom, strength and greater accomplishments in the years ahead.

May Almighty God continue to bless you and grant you many more years of fulfilment and distinguished service to our dear nation.

As part of efforts to empower women, strengthen livelihoods and expand access to clean cooking energy, I was in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, today to support two important interventions that reflect the people-centred vision of the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR—where governance must be felt where it matters most: in safer homes, stronger families, empowered women, thriving businesses and communities lifted by opportunity.

In this regard, I had the privilege of empowering 3,000 women with ₦100,000 each to strengthen their businesses, support their families and invest in the second planting season.

I also activated the National Grassroots LPG Pe*******on Programme in Akwa Ibom, with 27,000 LPG cylinders to be distributed to verified beneficiaries across the state’s 31 Local Government Areas.

For me, this goes beyond empowerment or cylinder distribution. It is about bringing government interventions directly to our people. When women are empowered, families and communities prosper, and Nigeria advances.

Beyond the cylinders, beneficiaries will receive support for six refills, with refill points to be established closer to the people. Our goal is to make access to clean cooking energy sustainable, rather than a one-off intervention.

The programme is part of the Decade of Gas initiative, with a national target of reaching five million homes by 2030. Akwa Ibom is the second state to benefit, after Bayelsa.

I am deeply grateful to His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, for his support and partnership, and to all stakeholders who contributed to making these interventions possible.

Our goal is simple: to ensure that Nigeria’s gas resources deliver tangible benefits to our people—empowering women, strengthening families and expanding access to cleaner cooking energy.

It was a privilege to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the high-level Presidential Session of the 2026 Infra for Africa Forum in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, today, where I spoke on “Powering Africa’s Industrialisation: Africa’s Gas Resources in Action.”

Africa must move beyond exporting raw resources and begin to deliberately utilise them to create value at home.

For Nigeria, we are placing domestic gas utilisation at the heart of our energy strategy because gas can power industries, strengthen electricity generation, support food security through fertiliser production, expand clean cooking and drive transportation.

We are also committed to strengthening regional energy security. Through projects such as the West African Gas Pipeline and the recently endorsed Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, Nigeria is positioning its abundant gas resources to support industrialisation and prosperity across Africa.

The time has come to move from gas to prosperity — not only for Nigeria, but for the African continent.

Today, I flagged off the state-level rollout of the Federal Government’s LPG Cylinder Distribution Programme in Bayelsa State, the first state to host this phase following the successful zonal rollout across Nigeria.

This initiative is a practical demonstration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and our commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian has access to cleaner, safer and more affordable cooking energy.

Every LPG cylinder placed in the hands of a beneficiary represents another household moving away from firewood and other harmful cooking fuels towards a healthier and more sustainable future.

Through the Decade of Gas Initiative, we will continue expanding this programme across the federation because no Nigerian should be left behind on our journey to universal access to clean cooking energy.

Ekperikpe Ekpo, today received the Chargé d’Affaires of the High Commission of Canada to Nigeria, His Excellency David Sproule, in his office for a courtesy visit. Also present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Patience Oyekunle, and other officials of the Ministry.

Discussions centred on strengthening bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and Canada, with particular emphasis on advancing collaboration in the gas sector.

Commending the Minister’s leadership of Nigeria’s gas sector, the Canadian envoy lauded Rt. Hon. Ekpo for the remarkable progress being recorded under his stewardship, noting that he was “over-achieving” in delivering on his mandate as Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas). He also expressed Canada’s readiness to collaborate with the Ministry in advancing Nigeria’s strategic gas development objectives.

Ekpo emphasised Nigeria’s resolve to build enduring partnerships with Canada, stating that the country remains open for business and welcomes Canadian investment, innovation, and technical expertise to unlock the full potential of its abundant gas resources in driving transportation, power generation, industrialisation, agriculture, and inclusive economic growth.

Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, today received the Chairman/Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr Jim Swartz, who led the company’s senior management team on a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.

The visit was aimed at strengthening the longstanding relationship between Chevron and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas), while reinforcing collaboration to accelerate the development of Nigeria’s vast natural gas resources for sustainable socio-economic development.

During the meeting, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for investment and strategic partnerships that will unlock gas potential, drive sector growth, enhance energy security and create employment opportunities for Nigerians.

Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, on Tuesday attended the Nigeria 2025 Licensing Round Commercial Bid Conference organised by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) in Abuja.

Speaking at the conference, the Minister described the exercise as a major milestone in Nigeria’s licensing process, saying it reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to developing the nation’s petroleum resources through a transparent, competitive and credible framework, in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

He reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to creating an enabling environment that attracts investment and accelerates production.

The bid round supervised by the NUPRC, saw 143 companies competing for 50 blocks on offer, including 16 blocks in the Niger Delta Onshore, 18 in the Niger Delta Shallow Water and one in the Niger Delta Deep Offshore.
