Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) - Tanzania

Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) - Tanzania The Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) is the research think tank. ESRF has just launched a Strategic Plan for the period 2012 – 2015

The Economic and Social Research Foundation was established in 1994 as an independent, not-for-profit institution for research and policy analysis. The formation of ESRF was based on the assumption that there was need and demand for an improved understanding of policy options and development management issues, and that the capacity for this was lacking in the Tanzania civil service. ESRF addressed

this gap by putting into place qualified Professional Staff, modest resources and a favourable research environment for the analysis and discussion of economic and social policy. The primary objectives of the Foundation are to strengthen capabilities in policy analysis and development management and to enhance the understanding of policy options in the government, the public sector, civil society, and the donor community and the growing private sector.

Building bridges through research and collaboration 🤝

Ahead of the upcoming China–Tanzania Dialogue hosted jointly with and , ESRF hosted a fruitful meeting with representatives from the China Agricultural University (CAU) to explore opportunities for deeper cooperation.

Discussions focused on research collaborations, internship programmes/academic exchanges and future knowledge partnerships. We are especially honoured that ESRF has been recognized as a hub for country and regional studies.

We look forward to strengthening this partnership and creating new opportunities for learning and impactful research.

At the Agro-Industrialization breakout session at , one message came through clearly:

Tanzania’s agriculture sector is ready for investment — but scale will depend on how projects are structured, financed, and connected across the value chain.

🌱 Horticulture continues to show strong growth potential, with rising demand from regional and international markets.

💧 Irrigation, cold chain systems, logistics, packhouses, and processing infrastructure were highlighted as some of the biggest investment opportunities.

🤝 Discussions also focused on blended finance, guarantees, leasing, and partnerships that can help reduce risk and unlock capital for farmers, SMEs, and processors.

☕ From coffee and edible oils to export-oriented horticulture, the conversation increasingly shifted toward value addition, aggregation systems, and building stronger market linkages.

The overall message: Tanzania has the produce, growing markets, and increasing investor interest. The next step is building investment-ready systems that can move opportunities into ex*****on.
