For someone struggling to see clearly, the simple ability to read, work, move independently or recognise a loved one can feel like a privilege. Yet for many people, poor vision is not only a health problem but also a financial challenge, especially when specialised eye care is beyond their reach.

The three-day free eye treatment camp in Korogwe Town Council, Tanga Region has shown what becomes possible when essential healthcare is taken directly to the people who need it most.

The initiative, conducted by the Lalji Foundation and Baraka Foundation in collaboration with Vision 4 All Eye Center, brought eye examinations, medicines, reading glasses and surgical services closer to residents who might otherwise have struggled to obtain them. In total, 3,259 people were reached during the camp, making it an important intervention in addressing barriers to eye care.

The figures emerging from the exercise are particularly significant. Lalji Foundation Chairman Imtiaz Lalji said 333 patients underwent eye surgery during the three days. Among them, 291 were diagnosed with cataracts, while 39 had minor eye conditions requiring surgical treatment.

The result kept Yanga firmly at the top of the table with 15 points from five matches, but for Mngqithi, the biggest satisfaction came from the manner in which his players seized control of the contest. The visitors set the tone early, applying relentless pressure and refusing to let Fountain Gate settle.

Mngqithi said the first-half performance was particularly encouraging, as his players kept the pressure on until they finally found the goals that put them in command.

“I am happy with our performance in the first half. We kept the stove hot up until we got the goals that we wanted, and from there, we managed to manage the game,” he said.

MWANZA: EXPANDING cross-border trade is raising the importance of accuracy in the quantities declared on packaged goods, increasing the need for Tanzanian manufacturers to align with internationally recognised measurement standards. Tanzaniatravel guide

Geita Regional Manager of the Weights and Measures Agency (WMA), Ms Eva Ikula, said recently that manufacturers and packers need to ensure their products meet internationally recognised measurement requirements as trade with other countries grows.

Speaking yesterday at the WMA pavilion during the ongoing East African Traders Exhibition at Furahisha grounds in Mwanza, Ms Ikula said measurement accuracy has become increasingly important as products enter more competitive markets.

“Packers must ensure that the weight of the products is at an internationally recognised level,” she said.

TANZANIA: TANZANIA is considering to introduce pre-entry training and examinations for aspiring civil servants to strengthen public service capacity and competency. Tanzaniatravel guide

TPSC Chief Executive and Principal, Dr Ernest Mabonesho said on Monday during a high-level visit by a Somali delegation, the move focuses at strengthening public service capacity.

The delegation, led by Somalia’s Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, Mr Hirsi Jama Ganni, concluded a working visit to the Tanzania Public Service College (TPSC), opening avenues for institutional cooperation and knowledge exchange.

The TPSC said the visit has reinforced the college’s growing reputation as a regional centre of excellence in public service training.

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar government has pledged to continue strengthening cooperation with China to improve access to quality healthcare in the isles.

Acting Minister for Health, Dr Saada Mkuya Salum, said this during a farewell ceremony for China’s 35th Medical Team and a third team of experts supporting the fight against schistosomiasis.

Dr Mkuya said Zanzibar has greatly benefited from the Chinese doctors, with patients receiving treatment for various conditions while local health workers gained skills through training and close collaboration.

The team served at Lumumba Regional Referral Hospital and Jitimai Hospital in Unguja, as well as Abdalla Mzee Hospital in Pemba, working alongside local professionals to deliver care and strengthen specialised skills.

They also conducted outreach services in 186 villages, supporting efforts to control schistosomiasis. The Minister said significant progress has been recorded in Pemba, where major strides have been made in reducing the disease.

The answer would eventually change Jacqueline Lawrence Mwakyambiki’s understanding of broadcasting, and, perhaps more importantly, offer a lesson on the role communication can play in Tanzania’s journey towards Development Vision 2050, popularly known as Dira 2050.

When Ms Mwakyambiki and her colleagues established Mbeya Highland FM, the ambition appeared straightforward. Mbeya needed a media outlet, they believed, and a commercial radio station could attract audiences, advertisers and eventually become a successful business.

“Peace is of paramount importance. All Tanzanians have a duty to protect and maintain it at all costs. We should not allow political or religious differences to divide us,” he said.

GEITA: CHATO District Commissioner, Mr Louis Bura, has called on the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) to scale up inspection and advisory services to match rising demand driven by rapid economic growth in the district.

He made the call during the opening of an occupational safety and health training for welders and carpenters at Kalebezo Village in Nyamirembe Ward, Chato District in Geita Region.

The training, conducted recently under OSHA’s strategic plan, involved 15 members of the Smart Welders and Furnitures group, whose centre offers vocational skills to residents within and beyond Nyamirembe Ward.

Mr Bura said Chato has recorded notable growth in economic activities, including mining, over the past three years.

“I commend OSHA for effectively executing its mandate of overseeing workplace safety and health nationwide.
