Karibu Tanzania 🇧🇪 🇹🇿

Tunayo furaha kumkaribisha Bi.

Karibu Tanzania, Balozi.

Welcome to Tanzania 🇧🇪 🇹🇿

We are pleased to welcome Mrs Lot Debruyne, Belgium's Ambassador-designate to the United Republic of Tanzania, who has arrived in Dar es Salaam. She will formally take up her functions upon presentation of her Letters of Credence, and will subsequently present credentials in Comoros, Malawi, Mauritius and Zambia, also covered by the Embassy.

A career diplomat with nearly two decades in international relations, political affairs and human rights, she joins us from Kinshasa, where she was Deputy Head of Mission. She has also served in Thailand, Egypt and at Belgium's Permanent Representation to the EU, and advised the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence.

She arrives with her family — and with a Congolese cat 🐈. Outside the office she cooks, practises Pilates and kitesurfs, and has already started asking where to find the best wind.

💬 Ulizeni Balozi — ask the Ambassador. Leave your question in the comments and she will answer a selection of them on video. Karibu Tanzania, Balozi.

🍟 Today is the International Day of Belgian Fries!

Our neighbours may never concede the point on where the fry was born, but on this much we are certain: fries are woven into the fabric of Belgium’s culinary tradition. Golden, hand-cut, and always, always fried twice. That last part is not a suggestion. It is tradition.

Call them French fries or call them Belgian fries. Eat them with cheese, with ketchup, or with a generous spoon of Andalouse. The name and the sauce are yours to choose, what matters is who you’re sharing them with.

And on that, Belgium and Tanzania understand each other perfectly. Tanzania took the humble fry and made it entirely its own: chipsi mayai folded hot out of the pan, chipsi kuku on a Friday night, kachumbari on the side and pili pili for the brave. From a frituur on a Brussels corner to the kibanda down the road in Dar, one golden idea, two proud traditions.

So: cheese or pili pili. Andalouse or kachumbari. A paper cone or a aluminium foil by the roadside. Grab a friend, and eat them while they’re hot.

Smakelijk! Karibu chipsi! 🇧🇪🇹🇿

Four years ago, Ambassador Peter Huyghebaert arrived in Tanzania. This week, he says goodbye, paying a farewell courtesy call on the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Dr. Ngwaru Jumanne Maghembe (MP). 🇧🇪🇹🇿

There was a great deal to look back on. In 2024, Belgium and Tanzania marked 40 years of development cooperation, four decades of work stretching from Kigoma in the west to the ports on the coast. The conversation also turned forward: technology, education and research, trade and jobs, and a partnership that is increasingly about business as much as aid.

But ask the Ambassador what he takes with him, and he won’t start with the milestones. He’ll start with the people, the warmth, the generosity, the everyday kindness and with a country he found beautiful from his first day to his last.

He also leaves on one last piece of good timing: Brussels Airlines began flying to Tanzania just before the end of his posting. He will tell you the airline has a habit of following him wherever he goes. He is only glad it finally caught up with him here. 🛬

Tunampongeza kwa dhati mpishi wetu, Manfred, kwa kutunukiwa Golden Palms of the Order of the Crown.

———

Last Thursday, we celebrated Ambassador Peter Hughebaert and Enabel Country Director Koen Goekint as they concluded their missions in Tanzania and packed their bags full of memories (and perhaps a little maize flour for ugali👀😅) as they embark on new adventures.

Thank you both for your dedication and commitment to strengthening the Belgium–Tanzania partnership. We wish you all the best in this exciting new chapter.

Safari njema and every success ahead!

The evening wasn’t only about farewells. Congratulations to our chef, Manfred, on receiving the Golden Palms of the Order of the Crown—a well-deserved recognition for years of exceptional service, culinary excellence, and for keeping our guests well-fed and happy over the years.
