TRUST IN DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS ERODING ACROSS AFRICA, WARNS MALAWI SPEAKER

The Speaker of the Parliament of Malawi and President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region, Rt. Hon. Sameer Suleman, has issued a stark warning regarding the decline of public confidence in democratic institutions across the continent.

Speaking today, August 12, 2026, during the official opening of the 55th CPA Africa Region Annual Conference at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, Suleman called on African legislatures to aggressively “renew the social contract” with their constituents

Addressing hundreds of delegates under the theme “Renewing the Social Contract: Parliaments as Catalysts for Inclusive Growth and Citizen Trust,” the Malawi Speaker noted that political instability and economic hardships in many African nations are directly linked to citizens losing faith in governance systems.

“Parliaments must act as the ultimate mirror reflecting the voices and anxieties of ordinary citizens. We must enhance transparency, accountability, and inclusivity to halt this dangerous erosion of trust, which threatens national peace and stability,” Suleman emphasized

The eight-day conference aims to chart a new path for continental governance, with sessions focusing on robust legislation, anti-corruption frameworks, and climate change resilience.

The opening ceremony was attended by distinguished continental leaders, including the Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia and Chairperson of the CPA Africa Executive Committee, Rt. Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta; CPA International Secretary-General, Mr. Stephen Twigg; and CPA Africa Regional Secretary, Mr. Baraka Leonard.
