African Impact - Teaching & Community Project, Zanzibar

African Impact - Teaching & Community Project, Zanzibar At African Impact, we create the most transformative & impactful volunteer and intern experiences Community buy-in is essential.

African Impact is a multi-award winning volunteer travel organisation operating responsible and sustainable volunteer projects and internship programs throughout Southern and East Africa. We have over 10 years’ experience and have facilitated over 12,000 volunteers in 12 countries across the continent! OUR VISION:

Being Responsible
We believe in having volunteer projects and internship programs

that make a long term, positive change to communities and conservation; and we work with responsible partners across Africa to achieve this. Being Leaders
We lead the way in volunteering by offering unique, high quality experiences and are recognised for growing and improving our own business and the volunteering industry at large. Being Appealing for Travellers
We expand the horizons of volunteering and responsible travel by attracting a wider range of people and offering new impactful experiences. Being an Appealing Employer
We attract the right people to work with us and create a dynamic environment where people can learn and grow with the company. Changing Lives

Our mission is to maximise the positive force of volunteering through responsible management, education, strong partnerships and a passion for making a difference, while making sure our volunteers have a fun and rewarding adventure with us. We truly believe that volunteering has the power to change lives; we’ve seen it first-hand. We always aim to integrate ourselves into every level of the community working from grassroots to partnerships with local governments and we strive to nurture a culture of mutual respect and understanding, and embracing diversity. The volunteer experiences we offer in Africa are based on three key points: 1) volunteers having an amazing time and experiencing everything South Africa has to offer; 2) volunteers learning as much as they can about local history, culture and wildlife and soaking up the essence of our country; and 3) supporting local communities and conservation efforts through education and hands-on help. It’s also important to us that volunteers understand their contribution so they leave knowing they have achieved something remarkable. Our Charity: The Happy Africa Foundation

As part of our commitment to making a positive impact, we set up The Happy Africa Foundation in 2008. The charity helps to independently monitor our projects and provides tools and expertise that help to ensure our sustainability. The charity also ensures that donations given by our volunteers are managed responsibly. Through our close partnership with them The Happy Africa Foundation has grown into an organisation that has funded numerous initiatives and programs in the communities where African Impact volunteer projects are based. The charity is proud to have financed the building of clinics, crèches and school classrooms, provided communities with education and skills training and helped beneficiaries improve their wellbeing and quality of life through improved nutrition and the provision of much-needed health equipment. Our Wildlife Trust: ALERT

African Impact were also instrumental in the establishment of the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) in 2005, a non-profit organization dedicated to the facilitation and promotion of sound conservation and management plans for the African lion in consultation with governments, wildlife authorities and communities. Alongside African Impact, ALERT also aims to support the ground-breaking four-stage African Lion Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild Program developed by our founders in 1999. The aim of this program is to provide a solution to augmenting the sharply decreasing numbers of African lions through the release of wild-born offspring from rehabilitated captive bred lions by raising awareness and funds to source, secure and prepare suitable release sites for the lions. Our Projects

To ensure the sustainability of our projects, we thoroughly evaluate each potential project with a detailed scorecard before setting up a volunteering program. This involves analysing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a project as well as its long-term viability and impact. Also, every single one of our projects has community stakeholders. We won’t run a project unless the community not only wants us there, but actually has ownership of the project. At African Impact we take a holistic approach to the implementation and running of our projects. We always aim to integrate ourselves into every level of the community working from grass roots to local governments. We have a core emphasis on learning and empowerment for all involved – changing the lives of people in the communities we impact, our volunteers and all African Impact staff.

Today we celebrated the graduation of the first cycle of our adult English classes this year 🎓
18 students are moving on to the next level, but today is really about everyone who showed up, stayed committed, and took on the challenge of learning something new.
This milestone was made possible thanks to the generosity of supporters from around the world: some who have experienced our project firsthand, and others who simply believed in it. Your contributions have carried this group through the past months, and we’re truly grateful.
A special thank you to our incredible teachers, Amir, Suzy, and Duli, for their dedication and flexibility; adapting, splitting groups, and keeping everything running strong even with limited resources.
And to all our students: congratulations. Your effort, consistency, and courage to learn deserve to be celebrated 👏

This week in the English courses at our adult school, beginners are building on last week’s knowledge by learning occupations that match the location vocabulary they mastered last week. The Low class, on the other hand, is looking into modal verbs and how to use them when giving advice to one another. The Medium class has reached the point in the curriculum where they are tackling the present perfect, a tense Swahili has as well, and learning which adverbs of frequency go with it. And in High class, students are revising indefinite pronouns and learning how to use linking words to make their English sound smoother.

Keep up the great work, students and teachers! There are already not that many weeks left in the curriculum 📚💪

While the students are completing week 9 at our school, let's give a shout-out to our third and “newest” local staff member, Amir. Similar to Duli, he is a born-and-raised Jambiani original and has always shown a big heart and great dedication to empowering the community. Before joining us in early 2024, he was active in several teaching and community projects, gaining valuable experience, particularly in teaching the little ones.

As a Teaching Coordinator in our projects, Amir shines through his thorough work and affectionate zest for learning. He brings lots of energy to every kind of lesson, whether in the classroom or on the sports field. As a successful footballer himself, he is occasionally cheered on by his fellow staff members from the sidelines, so we can give him back some of the love and energy he brings to our lives :)

Keep up the great work, Amir! We feel very lucky to have you!🤗

After coming back from Eid festivities, our school has now started the second half of the term, aiming to reach the next level of English and earn the respective certificates 💪. Beginners are focusing on verbs so they can form simple sentences with previously learned nouns; Low class is tackling the past tense after mastering the present tenses in recent weeks; Medium class is exploring adjectives and adverbs to make their English more colourful; and High class has moved on to reviewing different future tenses to polish their skills in discussing ambitions and future plans.

Full force ahead into this second half — and happy learning, everyone! 🤓📚

This week, let’s take the time to reintroduce and appreciate our local teacher and Groups Coordinator, Suzy. She joined us in 2022 in a volunteer and developmental role, but had already gained lots of experience in these sectors long before becoming part of African Impact.
After growing up in Arusha, Suzy moved to Zanzibar about six years ago and has since been dedicated to teaching, as well as women’s and community empowerment across several organisations 💪.
With her warm and approachable manner, Suzy is adored by students of all ages, as well as by her colleagues. She teaches with kindness, applies strictness when needed, and brings plenty of joyful tunes into her lessons to share Swahili culture and music with everyone.

Thank you for being a rock of the AI team, Suzy! Stay as amazing as you are 😊

Time flies, and we've already made it halfway through our 15-week curriculum at our school. This means that this week it was time to test our knowledge and get a better idea of which topics still need more focus by administering our midterm exams.

A total of 50 students took part in the exam, which we are really happy about 💪 After revising the respective topics the previous week, the students were tested on grammar, vocabulary, reading, and a little bit of writing, depending on their level.

Our teachers will now grade the papers and give feedback to the students so that we can all start the second half of the term next week with plenty of insights into our current status 🤓

While the students are busy with revision week in preparation for the upcoming midterm tests, let us (re)introduce our local staff more closely: starting with our longest-standing member, Teacher Duli (Abdilatif).

Born and raised in our beloved Jambiani, Duli spent three years in Dar es Salaam studying linguistics before joining us in 2022 first as teaching staff member. Since 2024, he has been serving as Teaching Coordinator and Community Liaison.

Duli always has an open ear for concerns from students, community members, and staff alike, and he navigates every situation with wisdom and patience. Moreover, he loves sharing fun facts about the Swahili, English, and Arabic languages whenever the opportunity arises 🤓

Here's to Teacher Duli - we appreciate your hard work so much! 📚💙

Ramadan Mubarak 🤲!
Ramadan, and the daily life changes that come with it, started last week in Zanzibar, yet our students have continued to dedicate their time to their classwork as usual. Week 5 and 6 in our curriculum are now complete.

Our Beginners have mastered fruits and vegetables and are now learning how to identify and name body parts in English. The Low class practiced forming the present tense in both positive and negative statements and are now acquiring different English prepositions. The Medium class has been introduced to English phrasal verbs (e.g., to pick up, to switch off) and moved on to different past tenses. The High class has learned how to boost their creative writing skills through the use of adverbs and identifiers.

Step by step, every level is making strides toward achieving a new certificate! 🤓💪

Our new term is in full swing at our adult school. We’ve just finished week 3 and are now moving into week 4!

Familiar topics from last term are being revised and built upon with new content: beginners have mastered weekdays and are now acquiring colours and other ways to describe their surroundings; students in the low class have learned to form different types of sentences, such as questions and their corresponding answers; the medium class has covered different future tenses; and the high class is already moving on to writing CVs and cover letters!

We are proud of all our students for showing up and making progress—hatua kwa hatua—step by step! 👣

Our school is now back at full speed! We just finished week 2 from our carefully crafted curriculums: The first grammar topics have been introduced at each level, along with applicable subjects such as introducing greetings at beginner level and how to go shopping in English at low level.

We are still welcoming new students, so be sure to join us as soon as possible. Happy learning!📖👂💬

🫶💪👍We couldn’t be happier with how 2026 has started at our school. From day one, we welcomed over 50 students per day across the five levels we are proud to offer once again. Both returning and new students attended, received their schedules and forms, and were placed in the appropriate level based on our baseline testing. Classes then kicked off at full speed.

We’re looking forward to many more busy weeks filled with eager students.

Newcomers who are still interested are welcome to visit us in the coming weeks!📚👩‍🏫📝

📣January update from Jambiani!

For the past couple of weeks we have been getting ready to restart classes in 2026. The local staff, consisting of Suzy, Duli and Amir, have been polishing off both our class rooms and the materials needed for class. Moreover, the three have been busy preparing and distributing flyers for the community to get informed about the upcoming schedule.

We are very excited to be able to offer 5 classes again for now in the low season and even more courses coming in summer during the high season!

All students, old and new, are very welcome from the 19th of January onwards!📚👩‍🏫
Check the flyer for all necessary information and feel free to reach out (:
