France's Bastille Day parade on July 14 is shaping up to be one of the most significant in recent memory.
The parade will take place on the Champs-Élysées under the theme "Europe's Strategic Awakening." According to the Military Governor of Paris, the goal is to show that France is "determined" and "not alone." Around 8,500 participants will march, including 6,500 on foot, 300 vehicles, roughly 100 motorcycles, 95 planes, 35 helicopters, and 193 horses from the Garde Républicaine (Republican Guard).
Ukraine will be front and center. The Patrouille de France, the French aerobatic display team, will open the aerial portion of the parade alongside two Mirage 2000 jets flown by joint French-Ukrainian crews. Soldiers from French battalions currently deployed on NATO's eastern flank, in Romania and Estonia, will also march down the avenue.
President Emmanuel Macron, who invited representatives from all 35 countries of the Coalition of Volunteers, will attend his 10th and final parade as head of state. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO's Supreme Commander General Grynkewich have also been invited.
Two details worth noting: the French Navy, celebrating its 400th anniversary this year, will close out the parade to the sound of the bagad de Lann-Bihoué, a traditional Breton pipe band based near Lorient. And for the first time, the Defense Digital Commissariat will march, marking the French military's shift toward cyber and digital operations. The parade will end with "Ode to Joy," the European anthem.
