Chimpanzee Trust

Chimpanzee Trust Our mission is "to promote chimpanzee conservation and environmental management for sustainable development"

Chimpanzee Trust’s activities include welfare of individual captive chimpanzees entrusted to its care, long-term management of a sanctuary for confiscated individuals that cannot be returned to the wild, intervention to assist individuals in the wild when deemed necessary, conservation education of the general Ugandan public with particularly emphasis on chimpanzees, ecotourism, community particip

ation, capacity building through training, and building viable national, regional and international partnerships on chimpanzee conservation. Chimpanzee Trust views the role of the chimpanzee as one of the key flagship species for conservation of wildlife in general and as an opportunity to address wider issues affecting the plight of wildlife conservation in general, both ex-situ and in-situ. Chimpanzee Trust ensures that all its work has the support and involvement of key stakeholders including local community and, as much as possible, becomes economically self-sustaining.

Great news from Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary team. For more information please email [email protected]

To all our cherished supporters, friends, and fans of Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, We are pleased to share that the annual health checks for our chimpanzees have been successfully completed this month of July 2025. This important exercise was led by Dr. Joshua Rukundo, a senior veterinarian and Executive Director of the Chimpanzee Trust, with the support of our dedicated veterinary and animal care team.

We’re happy to report that all chimpanzees were found to be in good health. According to Dr. Rukundo, both the physical examinations and laboratory test results showed no major health concerns. In contrast to previous years where some individuals required dental procedures such as extractions or fillings, this year’s findings revealed no such issues — a positive sign of improved oral and overall health.

Annual health checks are a vital part of our welfare program, ensuring each chimpanzee receives the best possible care. These checks also provide valuable learning opportunities for students and visiting professionals. This year, we were honored to be joined once again by Professor Alex Rosati, whose expertise greatly enriched the process.

We thank everyone who continues to support our mission. Your contributions make it possible for us to provide top-quality care to the amazing chimpanzees at Ngamba Island

Thank goodness it's Friday! 🥳🎉
Sending a shoutout to the incredible Debbie Cox, the trailblazer who brought to life. She rolled up her sleeves, and with the help of Uganda wildlife Education Centre built the sanctuary from the ground up, and even taught caretakers how to care for baby chimps and rescues. We can not ignore her contribution to sourcing for funding and developing community engagement programmes that have sensitized communities and saved a lot of chimp lives🐾
25 years later we stand on her foundation.

Throughout the centuries, brave explorers traveled the globe and beyond to discover new lands. Ferdinand Magellan of Portugal proved the world is round with his mission to sail around the world. Sir John Speke travelled the world to discover the source of the Nile and U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the moon.
But have you ever heard about the story of the first Chimpanzee to set foot on Ngamba Island.
Meet Nkuumwa aka "I'm protected" who was the first chimpanzee to set foot at Ngamba Island in 1998. 25 years later she is being protected just like her name translates

Today we celebrate the 30th coronation anniversary of his majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and also recognize the kingdom's contribution towards conservation through totems and folk stories, which helped and continue to help Baganda's all over the world to respect and protect nature because of its attachment to their genealogy.
