National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) Optimize livestock production and productivity through animal breeding

The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Databank (NAGRC & DB), was established by an Act of Parliament, the Animal Breeding Act, 2001. It is a body corporate mandated to take a leading role in establishing a comprehensive National Animal Breeding Programme in Uganda. NAGRC was established to cater for conservation of the indigenous breeds that are adapted to the local environment at the s

Today, National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) officially launched five key institutional documents: the Agency Client Charter, Service Delivery Standards, National Animal Breeding Strategy and Action Plan , Five-Year Strategic and Investment Plan, and Communication and Knowledge Management Strategy.

The Chief Guest, Hon. Rwamirama Bright K. (PhD), Minister of State for Animal Industry , officially launched the documents and called upon NAGRC&DB staff to fully implement the standards, strategies and commitments contained in them.

The Minister emphasized that the success of these documents will be measured by their implementation and the effective outcomes they deliver. He urged staff to ensure that the documents translate into improved service delivery, accountability and tangible benefits for farmers and other stakeholders.

The event also featured remarks from the NAGRC&DB Executive Director; the Chairperson of the NAGRC&DB Board of Directors; a representative of the Uganda National Farmers Federation; a representative from the Office of the Prime Minister, who delivered remarks on behalf of the Deputy, Head of Public Service; and a representative of the National Planning Authority.
The launch marks an important step in strengthening institutional performance, advancing coordinated animal breeding, improving service delivery, and enhancing communication and knowledge management at NAGRC&DB.

For the past two days, the National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) Board of Directors and Management have been meeting in Entebbe for a Joint Staff-Board Retreat to review and agree on the Agency’s priorities for FY 2026/27.

The discussions focused on key areas including the National Animal Breeding Strategy and Action Plan, improving performance and investment across NAGRC&DB farms and ranches, strengthening of the National Data Bank, livestock multiplication, as well as priorities from the different departments, units, programmes and projects.

The two-day retreat has enabled the Board and Management to jointly agree on key activities and investments for FY 2026/27, strengthening a shared approach towards improved performance and delivery of NAGRC&DB’s mandate.

On 15 July 2026, Primary Seven learners from Taibah International School toured National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB)’s National Bull Stud, where they observed a semen collection demonstration and visited the liquid nitrogen production plant.

Today, NAGRC&DB staff are supporting the P.7 Goldcrest class to present their “Cattle Rearing” exhibition during Taibah Agrofest. The team is providing technical guidance to help the learners explain modern cattle breeding and management practices to parents, fellow learners and other visitors.

These engagements promote practical agricultural learning and inspire young people to appreciate cattle farming as a career and business opportunity.

National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) is conducting a needs assessment among livestock farmers in Mbale District under the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project (UCSATP) to support the establishment of sustainable, farmer-led breed societies.

The engagement is identifying farmers’ breeding priorities and organisational needs to strengthen genetic improvement, improve access to quality breeding services, and advance climate-smart and productive livestock systems in Uganda.

Today, 10 July 2026, National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) graduated 80 Artificial Insemination Technicians under the Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture Transformation Project (UCSATP) after a three-week intensive training at the National Artificial Insemination Training Centre, Ruhengyere Ranch in Kiruhura District.

Drawn from 20 project beneficiary districts across Uganda’s major livestock production systems, this third cohort brings the total number of technicians trained under the project to 200 out of the targeted 288.

The training is strengthening last-mile delivery of quality breeding services, expanding access to superior livestock genetics, and boosting livestock productivity, resilience and commercialization.

National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) is conducting a needs assessment in Nakasongola District under the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project (UCSATP), in collaboration with the Nakasongola Livestock Company (NALICO), to support the establishment of sustainable livestock breed societies.

The collaboration is creating a platform for farmers, breeders and technical experts to identify shared priorities, strengthen organised breeding efforts, and advance livestock production systems that are more productive, resilient and responsive to farmers’ needs.

National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) was honoured to conclude a successful participation in the 32nd National Agricultural Show in Jinja, where the closing programme featured the Farmers’ Dialogue presided over by Hon. Lt. Col. (Rtd) Bright Dr. Rwamirama, Minister of State for Animal Industry, and the official closure officiated by Hon. Desire Muhooza , Minister of State for Agriculture, on behalf of the Hon. Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hon. FrankTumwebaze.

NAGRC&DB was also proud to receive the Best Government Agency Award at this year’s show.

The 32nd National Agricultural Show 2026 is officially underway!

National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) today joined other exhibitors at the official opening of the 32nd National Agricultural Show in Jinja, officiated by the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, representing H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and accompanied by the Minister of State for Animal Industry, Hon. Bright Rwamirama.

Visit the NAGRC&DB village exhibition to explore our dairy and beef cattle, pigs, goats, poultry, fish, rabbits and apiary enterprises, as well as modern animal breeding technologies.

Today, National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) graduated 80 Artificial Insemination (AI) Technicians from 20 Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture Transformation Project (UCSATP) beneficiary districts following an intensive training programme conducted at Ruhengyere Ranch, District.

The technicians have been equipped with practical skills in reproductive physiology, heat detection, semen handling and storage, artificial insemination procedures, breeding records management, animal welfare, and field-based service delivery.

The training contributes to NAGRC&DB's efforts to strengthen AI service delivery, expand access to quality breeding services, and enhance livestock productivity across Uganda.
Congratulations to the graduates as they join the growing network of skilled AI service providers serving farming communities nationwide.
