Rwenzori region leaders at their annual joint and integrated regional performance review conference at Fort Breeze Hotel have recommended that before marriage every couple should present a certificate to the church indicating that he or she Fromm sickle cell disease.
This follows the high number of sickle cells recorded at the health facilities in the region.
Dr.Beatrice Komugisa a pediatrician at Fort Portal regional Hospital revealed that 600 patients had been registered at the referral. She noted that there are so many cases of sickle cells with the majority coming demanding for blood transfusion. Dr.Komugisa ,says the hospital has a sickle cells clinic where screening and testing is done and government is supportive with the required medicine.
To her dismay,Dr.Komugisa disclosed that mothers who've reported babies with sickle cells,their fathers have vanished leaving mothers struggling with the children.
The medic observed that to prevent the problem,couples intending to tie a knot in church should undergo mandatory sickle cells screening.
Dr. Bahizi Archbald Newton Sebahire said before marriage every couple should present a certificate on sickle cell screening and in 10 years the disease will be eliminated.
Dr.Richard Rwabuhinga Kabarole District Chairperson said the number of sickle cell 5,527 that was reported is worrying and called on stakeholders to strengthen awareness creation for the people to embrace sickle cell screening services that are available at all health facilities in the district.
Sickle cell disease is a generic disorder affecting hemoglobin production,causing red blood cells misshapen and breakdown prematurely leading to anemia,pain crises,infections and organs damage.
The Rwenzori regional annual review mission and integrated regional performance conference attracted District Health Officers,RDCs,RCC,District Chairpersons,Fort Portal senior consultants,DHEs,media,religious leaders and development partners to assess the progress of key health services delivery performance indicators,promoting continued improvement,effective planning,coordination and accountability.
