Acholi Parliamentary Group Chairperson Calls for Increased Perennial Crop Farming

The Chairperson of the Acholi Parliamentary Group, Hon. Catherine Lamwaka, has urged communities across the Acholi Sub-region to embrace perennial crop farming, particularly coffee cultivation alongside traditional food crops, as a sustainable pathway to economic transformation.

Hon. Lamwaka said the initiative is aimed at lifting households out of poverty by increasing incomes, improving livelihoods, and enhancing the quality of life for families across the region.

She expressed confidence that within the next five years, the Acholi Sub-region will make a significant contribution to Uganda's economy if more households engage in commercial agriculture. She called on residents to work hard, adopt profitable farming practices, and invest in high-value crops to boost production, increase sales, and improve household incomes.

The event brought together family, friends, community leaders, and well-wishers in a celebration of faith, gratitude, and unity, as participants offered thanks for God's blessings and continued guidance.

Restoring Hope Through Education in Acholi

Hon. Catherine Lamwaka has applauded Suubi Foundation Canada for transforming education across the Acholi sub-region through investments in school infrastructure and learner support.

At Lela Obaro Primary School in Omoro District, the foundation donated scholastic materials to Primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils to boost their preparation for PLE. The delegation also inspected the ongoing renovation of the school's dormitory and construction of a modern kitchen to support the introduction of a full boarding section.

The foundation has also invested millions of shillings in teachers' houses, classroom blocks and a computer laboratory with internet connectivity, creating a better learning environment for both learners and teachers.

The government has allocated Shs45 billion for food relief to households affected by famine in the Karamoja and Acholi sub-regions, State Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Dr Lillian Aber has announced.

Speaking on Tembo FM's Lagam Pa Lwak programme, Dr Aber, who also serves as the Kitgum District Woman MP, said all nine districts in Karamoja will benefit from the relief programme. In Acholi, only Kitgum and Agago districts have been selected due to the severity of the food insecurity, as established through government assessments.

She added that the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) is preparing to distribute seeds for the second planting season across all districts in Acholi to help farmers recover from poor first-season harvests caused by inadequate rainfall.

Dr Aber also cautioned farmers to prepare for the El Niño conditions forecast for August, warning that they could significantly affect agricultural production and livelihoods.

Regarding the planned refugee settlement in Labongo Amida West Sub-county, Dr Aber said the site at Okidi has already been gazetted, and the demarcation of key social and administrative facilities is underway.

She urged residents to welcome the refugees, saying their presence is expected to improve access to health and education services, create employment opportunities, boost trade, and stimulate local economic development.
