Delegates visit Kiryandongo Settlement

The delegates had the opportunity to visit Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement to experience firsthand the operations and living conditions of refugees in Uganda.

According to district leaders, UNHCR Uganda and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) heads, the settlement currently hosts about 168,000 refugees and asylum seekers.

While the Government of Uganda and over 80 development partners are working tirelessly to support livelihoods for both refugees and host communities, gaps remain. One pressing issue highlighted during the visit was education. The district's Chief Administrative Officer shared that limited classroom space is making teaching difficult, and the need for additional infrastructure is urgent.

The delegates also interfaced with the reception center, learning about the services provided and how the settlement is managed. It was a humbling experience to see the reality behind the statistics, and to hear directly from the people living and working there.

Day 2 of the Regional Workshop on Refugees and IDPs

Today's sessions brought the team closer to the realities on the ground. The delegates heard from Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), UNHCR Uganda, and UNDP, on regional frameworks and development responses.

District Planners of Obongi and Moyo refugee-hosting districts shared their experiences. To them, these are not just policies but their daily lives; their access to land, livelihoods, and peaceful coexistence.

The exchanges are commitment from all seven countries to share frameworks and best practices, understand how they affect people in communities, and find sustainable solutions together.

Today marks Day 1 of our regional workshop on Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and JICA are honored to bring together government officials from Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia to share experiences and strategies on sustainable return and peaceful coexistence in displacement-affected areas.

This dialogue focuses on finding sustainable return for those affected by conflict and climate change across the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region.

The workshop was officially opened by the Hon. Sam Engola, Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, who delivered keynote remarks, alongside representatives from the Embassy of Japan and JICA.

Strengthening WASH Management for Better Life in Refugee Settlements and Host Communities

JICA in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) and the Northern Umbrella of Water and Sanitation (NUWS), is supporting the development of the Project for Capacity Enhancement on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Management for a Better Life in Refugee Settlements and Host Communities. Expected to commence in 2027, the three-year project aims to strengthen NUWS's capacity to plan, improve, operate, and maintain water supply systems serving Bidibidi Refugee Settlement, Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement, and surrounding host communities in West Nile, contributing to reliable, sustainable, and climate-resilient water services for both refugees and host populations.

A major milestone was achieved with the signing of the Minutes of Meeting between JICA, MWE, and NUWS following the completion of the Detailed Planning Survey. The agreement confirms the project framework and the commitment of the three institutions to support the transition from humanitarian-led water services to sustainable utility management.

The Minutes were signed by Mr. Hidetake Aoki on behalf of JICA and Eng. Moses Bujure on behalf of MWE, and witnessed by Dr. Martin Wamalwa, Manager of NUWS, reaffirming a shared commitment to improving the quality of life of refugees and host communities through sustainable WASH services in Northern Uganda.

The Executive Committee of the Uganda JICA Ex-Participants Association (UJEPA), led by its President, Eng. Watta Ivan, held a highly fruitful meeting with the Japan Alumni of Tanzania (JATA), led by Mr. Khery Msese. The engagement fostered collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a renewed commitment to advancing the impact of JICA alumni across East Africa.

Sharing a post from JICA Kyushu.

⚾ Baseball is building bridges between Japan and Uganda.

JICA and the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks have launched a new JICA Volunteer collaboration to promote baseball and support youth development in Uganda.

From late July, the first volunteer will begin activities in Uganda, working not only to improve baseball skills but also to strengthen coaching capacity and support the development of the country’s baseball system.

Sport has the power to connect people, inspire young generations, and create lasting impact.

We look forward to seeing this exciting partnership grow in Uganda.

Last week, the Ministry of Water and Environment together with JICA, officially handed over motorcycles to support the implementation of the project in the West Nile Districts of Pakwach, Arua, Terego, Yumbe, and Moyo.

“These motorcycles will boost mobility and enable field teams to effectively monitor and protect our natural resources”. During the handover, District Local Government Officers, including Chief Administrative Officers and Forestry Officers, pledged to utilise this equipment efficiently to ensure we achieve the project’s environmental goals.

JICA Donates Motorcycles to Support Environmental Conservation in West Nile Sub-region.

JICA Uganda Chief Representative Mr. Osaki Mitsuhiro handed over nine units of motorcycles to the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) to facilitate the implementation of Sustainable Natural Resources Management and Enhanced Refugee-Host Co-existence Project in West Nile Sub-region (SUNReC).

The MWE Under Secretary Ms. Catherine Nassuna expressed gratitude to JICA for the timely support since the motorcycles are expected to enhance mobility for project personnel, allowing them to reach remote areas and effectively monitor conservation efforts across the expansive West Nile Sub-region.

Jointly implemented by JICA and MWE, the project aims to promote environmental sustainability while fostering peaceful coexistence between refugee and host communities.

As part of ongoing volunteer activities, a JICA volunteer, Yuka Nakamura, has been actively supporting skills development at St. Simon Vocational School, particularly within the catering and hospitality department.

In a recent initiative, she organised a practical competition for students pursuing catering and hospitality management. The purpose of this activity was to give students an opportunity to demonstrate their skills, identify areas where they excel, and recognize where improvement is needed.

The competition created a hands-on learning environment where students engaged in real-life culinary and service tasks. Through this experience, they gained confidence, enhanced their creativity, and developed a deeper understanding of professional standards in the industry.

This activity highlights the importance of practical training and the positive impact of international volunteer support.
