Last week, JICA Senior Representative participated in the 5th Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting for the “Patient Safety Establishment through 5S‑CQI(Continuous Quality Improvement)‑TQM(Total Quality Management)” Project, hosted by the Ministry of Health.

During the meeting, the JICA Project team highlighted key achievements to date, including the successful peer-to-peer learning activity at Moroto Regional Hospital. We strongly encourage the Ministry of Health, members of the SCAPP, and the Project team to continue working closely together to achieve our shared objective: improving the quality of healthcare services through 5S‑CQI‑TQM and strengthening patient safety management."

Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, development partners and private sector players convened for the inaugural Annual Rice Sector Review Meeting aimed at deliberating on how to strengthen Uganda’s rice industry and boost its national self-sufficiency.

Organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries(MAAIF) with support from the Coalition of African Rice Development (CARD) initiative, the meeting brought together key stakeholders to assess progress and mobilize further support for the implementation of the National Rice Development Strategy II, which seeks to achieve sustainable national self-sufficiency in rice production while contributing to regional food security under the East Africa Rice Development Strategy.

JICA joined partners such as the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), AfricaRice, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), Kilimo Trust, the private sector and farmer organizations to review achievements, challenges and opportunities within the rice sector.

Discussions focused on strengthening resilience in rice production systems, improving competitiveness of locally produced rice, industrializing the rice value chain and empowering farmers and other actors across the sector.

Ultimately, outcomes of the meeting will guide future policy decisions, funding priorities and coordinated investments aimed at building a sustainable and resilient rice industry in Uganda.

JICA Uganda in partnership with Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), is set to implement the Project for Climate Resilient Northern Uganda Farmers’ Livelihood Improvement (CR-NUFLIP).

The initiative seeks to improve and stabilize the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Northern Uganda, with a focus on the Acholi and West Nile Sub-regions including refugee-hosting communities. These areas are facing heightened vulnerability due to climate change impacts, accompanied by socio-economic challenges.

The collaboration was formally confirmed during the signing of the Minutes of Meeting for the planned project by the Commissioner, Department of Crop Production and Protection, MAAIF and the Deputy Director General and Group Director for Agricultural and Rural Development, Economic Development Department, JICA Headquarters. The agreement followed a three-week Detailed Planning Survey executed by the two institutions.

This video introduces three key characteristics of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)’s cooperation with Africa:
1. a people-centered approach,
2. respect for Africa’s ownership, and
3. the utilization of Japan’s experience.

It also presents JICA’s President Tanaka’s initiatives toward TICAD9 under the theme, “Co-create innovative solutions with Africa – Bring new vitality to both Africa and Japan.” In this context, he explains the three approaches JICA is advancing: co-creation driven by the energy of youth, the pursuit of innovative solutions, and the strengthening of foundation for international cooperation.

Through TICAD, JICA promotes collaboration between Japan and African nations, as well as between Africa and the international community.

The newly appointed Chief Representative (CR) of JICA Uganda conducted a site visit to the Kampala Metropolitan Transmission Improvement Project, including one of the project sites in Maya.

I am JOCV Ueno Yasuyo.

I recently gave a lecture on vital sign measurement and Basic Life Support (BLS) at Good Samaritan School of Nursing and Midwifery in Lira, a private nursing school whose students do clinical practice at LRRH. The students practiced CPR using plastic bottles, and we ended with a demonstration.

In Uganda, many students play a central role in clinical care during training, but face challenges due to unstructured supervision and limited chances to learn essential skills systematically. Through my daily work in the ward and interactions with students, I’ve strongly felt the need to invest in future nurses.

For most attendees, this was their first structured session. Their feedback included, “It was enjoyable,” “I learned a lot,” and “We would like more opportunities like this.”

Around 80 people; students, teaching staff, and the principal attended. I believe nursing students in Uganda have great potential. Strengthening their education is key to improving healthcare quality in the country. I will continue these efforts to support future nurses and contribute to Uganda’s healthcare improvement.
